Removal & Installation



1.6L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Release the fuel pressure following the proper procedure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable.
     
    Distributor cap
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Valve cover bolts in removal sequence
     

  6.  
  7. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Release the fuel pressure following the proper procedure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable.
     
    Power brake booster vacuum hose
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Engine harness, place aside
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Valve cover bolts in removal sequence

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Release the fuel pressure following the proper procedure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    CAUTION
    Do not shock it. Do not disassemble it. The tip of the camshaft position sensor generates a strong magnetic field. Keep it away from metallic particles or objects affected by magnetic fields.


    NOTE
    If replacement is necessary, remove the valve cover oil seal using a flat-head screwdriver.



    Disconnect the negative battery cable.
     
    Harnesses on top surface and right side of valve cover aside
     
    Ignition coils
     
    PCV hose and blow-by hose from the valve cover
     
    If necessary, PCV control valve
     
    Intake valve timing control solenoid valve and camshaft position sensor
     



    If necessary, the intake valve timing control solenoid valve and camshaft position sensor

    Valve cover oil seal using a suitable tool

  7. To install the valve cover oil seal, perform the following:
    NOTE
    There are two types of oil seal. If oil seal with flat bottom surface is pressed in, drift with any inner diameter can be used.



    Using a drift with outer diameter 97 mm (3.82 in) and inner diameter 83 mm (3.27 in) to 88 mm (3.46 in), press in oil seal.

    Press oil seal in until it is flush with installation surface.

  8.  
  9. To install valve cover., perform the following procedure:

    Position the gasket aligning its shape with No.1 camshaft bracket side. Align positioning pin with gasket holes and install.
     
    Install the gasket (for circumference, square type) to installation groove of valve cover.

    Apply Genuine RTV Silicone Sealant, or equivalent sealant to the positions shown.
     
    Install the Valve cover.

  11. Torque the valve cover bolts in sequence and to the following specifications:

    Bolt No.1: 0.98 inch (25 mm) tighten to: 78-95 inch lbs. (8.82-10.78 Nm)
     
    Bolt No.2: 2.56 inch (65 mm) tighten to: 78-95 inch lbs. (8.82-10.78 Nm)
     
    All other bolts (0.79 inch (20 mm) tighten to 61-84 inch lbs. (6.9-9.5 Nm)
     

  12.  
  13. Install the intake valve timing control solenoid valve and bolt and tighten to: 78-95 inch lbs. (8.82-10.78 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install camshaft position sensor and bolt and tighten to: 64-95 inch lbs. (7.2-10.8 Nm.)
  16.  
  17. Install the PCV valve and bolt and tighten to: 15-21 ft. lbs. (19.6-29.4 Nm).
  18.  
  19. To complete installation, reverse remaining removal procedure.
  20.  

2.0L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Release the fuel pressure following the proper procedure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable.
     
    Power brake booster vacuum hose
     
    Spark plug wires
     
    Engine harness, place aside
     
    PCV valve
     
    EGR volume control and EGR temperature sensor
     
    spark plugs
     
    Valve cover and bolts in removal sequence

  6.  

To install:

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten valve cover bolts in sequence and torque to: 69-87 inch lbs. (8-10 Nm)
  4.  

2.5L Engines

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Release the fuel pressure following the proper procedure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable.
     
    Ignition coils
     
    PCV hose and breather hose

    Valve cover and the oil filler cap and PCV valve if necessary to transfer to the new valve cover

To install:

  1. To install, refer to illustration -a- to apply Silicone RTV sealant to joint part of No.1 camshaft bracket and cylinder head.
  2.  
  3. Refer to illustration -b- to apply sealant in a 90 degree angle to the illustration -a-.
  4.  
  5. Install the valve cover. The valve cover gasket must be securely installed in the groove in the valve cover.

  7. Torque the valve cover in sequence to the following specifications:

    First pass: 9-26 inch lbs. (1-2.9 Nm)
     
    Second pass: 65-82 inch lbs. (7.4-9.3 Nm)
     

  8.  
  9. If necessary, install the oil filler cap and PCV valve. Lubricate the PCV valve O-ring with new engine oil.
  10.  
  11. To compete installation, reverse remaining removal procedure.
  12.  

3.5L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Release the fuel pressure following the proper procedure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable.
     
    mass air flow sensor electrical connector and remove the air cleaner assembly and air intake tubes.
     
    windshield wiper arms and motor assembly and the front cowl panel
     
    intake manifold collector using power tool. Remove gasket and the electric throttle control Actuator
     
    six ignition coils
     
    two intake valve timing control solenoid valves and gaskets.
     
    RH and LH valve covers from cylinder head in removal sequence
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Reverse removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Apply Genuine Silicone RTV Sealant or equivalent to the areas on the front corners.
  4.  
  5. Torque valve cover bolts in sequence to the following specifications:

    First pass: 9-26 inch lbs (0.96-2.96 Nm)
     
    Second pass: 65-82 inch lbs. (7.33-9.33 Nm)
