Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery cables
     
    Battery and tray
     
    Air cleaner box with the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
     
    Air duct
     
    Clutch operating cylinder
     
    Speedometer pinion electrical connectors
     
    Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch electrical connectors
     
    Starter
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
     
    Shift control rod
     
    Front wheels
     
    Halfshafts and properly support the engine
     
    Rear and left side engine mounts
     
    Transaxle assembly

To install:

  1. Install the transaxle assembly into the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Torque the 4 lower mounting bolts to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm) and all remaining bolts to 29-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Rear and left side engine mounts
     
    Halfshafts and remove the engine support
     
    Both front wheels
     
    Shift control rod
     
    CKP sensor
     
    Starter and torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
     
    PNP switch electrical connectors
     
    Speedometer pinion connectors
     
    Clutch operating cylinder
     
    Air duct and air cleaner assembly
     
    Battery tray and battery
     
    Both battery cables
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the transmission with clean fluid.
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the fluid from the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Both battery cables
     
    Battery and bracket from the vehicle
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from the transaxle
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    All electrical connectors from the transaxle
     
    Control cable from the transaxle
     
    Speed sensor, OD position switch and Back-up lamp switch
     
    Neutral position switch
     
    Starter
     
    Shift control rod
     
    Halfshafts and properly support the transmission
     
    Left side and rear engine to transmission mounts
     

  6.  
  7. Slide the transmission away from the engine and lower the transmission assembly.
  8.

  1. Install the transaxle mounting bolts in the proper location as noted during removal.
    1. On 1.6L and 1.8L engines: torque the 2 bottom bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm) and all other bolts to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).

    3. On 2.0L engines: torque the 2 bottom bolts to 23-31 ft. lbs. (31-42 Nm) and all other bolts to 51-59 ft. lbs. (70-79 Nm).

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Left side and rear engine to transmission mounts
     
    Halfshafts
     
    Shift control rod
     
    Starter
     
    Neutral position switch
     
    Speed sensor, OD position switch and back-up lamp switch
     
    Clutch control cable
     
    CKP sensor
     
    Air cleaner assembly
     
    Battery and both cables
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the transmission with clean oil to the proper level.
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
