Fig. Removing steering gear mounting bolts-Sentra

CAUTION
The rotation of the spiral cable (SRS -Air bag- component part) is limited. If the steering gear must be removed, set the front wheels in the straight-ahead direction. Do not rotate the steering column while the steering gear is removed.

CAUTION
Remove the steering wheel before removing the steering lower joint to avoid damaging the SRS spiral cable.

NOTE
Before removing lower joint from gear, set gear in neutral (wheels in straight-ahead position). After removing lower joint, put matching mark on pinion shaft and pinion housing to record neutral position.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tie-rod outer sockets.

    Power steering lines.

    Steering gear lower joint.

    Return line fitting

    Steering gear mounting bolts

Steering gear through the passenger side

  6.

To install:

NOTE
Observe specified tightening torque when tightening high-pressure and low-pressure line connectors. Excessive tightening will damage threads of connector or O-ring.

NOTE
The O-ring in low-pressure pipe connector is larger than that in high-pressure connector. Take care to install the proper O-ring.

  1. Install power steering line connector. Tighten the following to specification:
    CAUTION
In the following step, tightening torque must not exceed 36 ft lbs (49 Nm).

Low pressure side: 1997-1998 Sentra 20-29 ft. lbs (27-39 Nm). On all others, 21-28 ft. lbs (28-39 Nm)

High pressure side: 1997-1998 Sentra 11-18 ft. lbs (15-25 Nm). On all others, 11-18 ft. lbs (15-25 Nm)

  2.
  3. Initially, tighten nut on tie-rod outer socket and knuckle arm to 22-28 ft lbs (29-39 Nm). Tighten further to align nut groove with first pin hole so that cotter pin can be installed.
  4.
  5. Set left and right dust boots to equal deflection. Attach lower joint by aligning matching marks of pinion shaft and pinion housing.
  6.
  7. Tighten gear housing mounting bracket bolts and nut in sequence.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
Remove steering gear insulators to gain access. Do not remove the bracket from the power steering gear housing.

    Front wheels

    Outer tie-rod ends

    Lower joint pinch bolt.

Power steering high and low pressure lines from the power steering gear

    Two power steering gear bolts

Power steering gear and linkage assembly

  6.

To install:

Low pressure side: 21-28 ft. lbs (28-39 Nm)

  3. Initially, tighten nut on tie-rod outer socket and knuckle arm to 22-28 ft lbs (29-39 Nm). Tighten further to align nut groove with first pin hole so that cotter pin can be installed.
  4.
  5. To complete installation, reverse remaining removal procedure.

  4.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
Tightening torque for the castle nut cannot exceed 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
