WARNING
Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Serious burns could occur from high pressure coolant escaping from the radiator.

To remove and install thermostat, refer to illustration and water pump procedure.

1.8L Engine

WARNING
Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Serious burns could occur from high pressure coolant escaping from the radiator.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower radiator hose.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water inlet and take out the thermostat.
  10.  
  11. To install perform the following:

    Install gum ring to thermostat
     
    Install thermostat with jiggle valve or air bleeder at upper side
     

  12.  
  13. To complete installation, revere remaining removal procedure.
  14.  
  15. Fill the cooling system.
  16.  
  17. After installation, run engine for a few minutes and check for leaks.

2.0L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. To complete removal, refer to illustration.
  8.  
  9. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  10.  
  11. Install thermostat with jiggle valve or air bleeder at upper side.
  12.  
  13. Apply a continuous bead of liquid gasket to mating surface of water inlet.
  14.  
  15. After installation, fill the cooling system and run engine for a few minutes. Check for leaks.

2.5L Engine

WARNING
Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Serious burns could occur from high pressure coolant escaping from the radiator.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove radiator lower hose from the engine coolant inlet side.
  8.  
  9. Remove engine coolant inlet and thermostat.
  10.  
  11. To install, reverse removal procedure
  12.  
  13. When installing engine coolant temperature sensor, use Genuine RTV Silicone Sealant or equivalent.
  14.  
  15. Install the thermostat with the whole circumference of the flange part fitting securely inside the rubber ring.
  16.  
  17. Install the thermostat with the jiggle valve facing upwards. The position deviation may be within the range of +/- 10 degrees.
  18.  
  19. If necessary, to install the heater pipe, first apply a mild detergent to the O-ring and then quickly insert the pipe into the housing.
  20.  
  21. Fill the cooling system.
  22.  
  23. After installation, run engine for a few minutes and check for leaks.

3.5L Engine

WARNING

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with an engine undercover, remove using a power tool.
  8.  
  9. Remove drive belts
  10.  
  11. Remove water drain plug on water pump side of the engine.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect lower radiator hose.
  14.  
  15. Remove engine coolant inlet and thermostat assembly.
    NOTE
    Do not disassemble engine coolant inlet and thermostat. Replace them as a unit, if necessary.

  16.  
  17. To install, reverse removal procedure.
    NOTE
    Install thermostat with jiggle valve facing upward.

  18.  
  19. Fill the cooling system.
  20.  
  21. After installation, run engine for a few minutes and check for leaks.
