  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.
  3. Drain the coolant.
  4.

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Detach the coolant inlet and outlet hoses.
  2.
  3. On the 610, remove the center ventilator grille from the bottom of the instrument panel.
  4.
  5. Remove the heater duct hose from both sides of the heater unit. Remove the defroster hose or hoses on the 610. On the 710, remove the intake duct and defroster duct from both sides of the heater unit. Remove the console box on the 710 if so equipped.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the electrical wires of the heater unit (and air conditioner, if so equipped) at their connections.
  8.
  9. Disconnect and remove the heater control cables.
  10.
  11. On 710 and 1974-76 610, remove the two bolts on each side of the unit and one on the top. For 1973 610s, remove one attaching bolt from each side and one from the top center of the unit.
  12.
  13. Remove the unit.
  14.

To install:

  1. Install the unit in the vehicle with retaining bolts. Connect the heater control cables and the electrical wires of the heater unit (and air conditioner, if so equipped) at their connections.
  2.
  3. Install the heater duct hose to both sides of the heater unit. Install the defroster hose or hoses on the 610. On the 710, install the intake duct and defroster duct to both sides of the heater unit. Install the console box on the 710 if so equipped.
  4.
  5. On the 610, install the center ventilator grille to the bottom of the instrument panel.
  6.
  7. Reconnect the two heater hoses with new hose clamps. Connect the battery ground cable and refill the cooling system.
  8.
  9. Run the engine for a few minutes with the heater on to make sure the coolant level is correct. Check for any coolant leaks.
  10.
  11. Check the heater system for proper operation.
