Gasoline Fuel Filter

Print

The fuel filter on all models is a disposable plastic unit. It's located on the right inner fender. The filter should be replaced at least every 24,000 miles. A dirty filter will starve the engine and cause poor running.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

510, 610, 710 and 1977-79 200SX
  1. Locate fuel filter on right side of the engine compartment.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses from the fuel filter. Make certain that the inlet hose (bottom) doesn't fall below the fuel tank level or the gasoline will drain out.
  4.
  5. Pry the fuel filter from its clip and replace the assembly.
  6.
  7. Replace the inlet, outlet lines and hose clamps. Secure the hose clamps to prevent leaks.
  8.
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  10.

1977-79 810

These models utilize an electric fuel pump. The pressure on these models must be released before removing the fuel filter.

  1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the cold start valve harness connector.
  4.
  5. Use two jumper wires and connect one side of each to a terminal on the cold start valve connector.
  6.

Be sure to keep both terminals separate in order to avoid short circuiting.

  1. Connect the two remaining terminals of the jumper wires to the negative and positive battery terminals in order to release the pressure in the fuel system.
  2.
  3. Unfasten the clamps securing the fuel lines to the inlet and outlet sides of the fuel filter and then remove the fuel lines.
  4.
  5. Remove the fuel filter.
  6.
  7. Install new fuel filter with new hose clamps. Replace fuel lines if necessary.
  8.
  9. Reconnect the cold start valve harness connector.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
  12.
  13. Start engine and check for leaks.

These models utilize an electric fuel pump. The pressure must be released on these models before removing the fuel filter. On later years, the fuel pump fuse should be removed, instead of the relay. Crank the engine a couple times to release pressure before removing the fuel filter. On some late models, the "Check Engine Light" will stay on after installation is completed. The memory code in the control unit must be erased. To erase the code disconnect the battery cable for 10 seconds then reconnect after installation of fuel filter. Refer to for more information.

  1. Start the engine.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the #2 fuel pump relay harness connector with the engine running.
  4.

See for illustrations.

  1. After the engine stalls, crank it two or three times.
  2.
  3. Turn the ignition off and reconnect the #2 fuel pump relay harness connector.
  4.
  5. Unfasten the clamps securing the fuel lines to the inlet and outlet side of the fuel filter and then disconnect the fuel lines.
  6.
  7. Remove the fuel filter.
  8.
  9. Install the fuel filter and new hose clamps. Replace fuel lines if necessary.
  10.
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.
