The vehicle identification plate is located on the cowl at the rear of the engine compartment. The plate contains the model type, engine capacity, maximum horsepower, wheelbase and the engine and chassis serial numbers.

The vehicle or chassis serial number is broken down as shown in the illustration and described below. The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is also reproduced on a plate on the upper left surface of the instrument panel and can be seen from the outside through the windshield. The VIN is broken down as follows:



First three digits/letters: Manufacturer
 
Fourth letter: Engine type
 
Fifth letter: Vehicle line
 
Sixth digit: Model change number (0-9)
 
Seventh digit: Body type (sedan or wagon)
 
Eighth letter: Restraint system. S means standard
 
Ninth digit: Check digit 0-9 or X to verify that the serial number is being read off the car itself
 
Tenth letter: Model year in a letter code
 
Eleventh letter: Manufacturing plant code
 
Last six digits: Vehicle serial (chassis) number
