    Starter motor

    Transmission mount and crossmember. Support the transmission.
     
    Transmission flange bolts

NOTE
The transmission flange bolts vary in length. Note their positions for assembly.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission. Tighten the large bolts to 29-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm) and the small bolts to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm).
     
    Transmission mount and crossmember. Tighten the mount and crossmember fasteners to 30-38 ft. lbs. (41-52 Nm).
     
    Torque converter. Tighten the bolts to 33-43 ft. lbs. (44-59 Nm).
     
    Starter motor
     
    VSS sensor connector
     
    Transmission control harness connectors
     
    Shift cable
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Transmission oil cooler lines

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission. Tighten the large bolts to 29-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm) and the small bolts to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm).
     
    Transmission mount and crossmember. Tighten the mount and crossmember fasteners to 30-38 ft. lbs. (41-52 Nm).
     
    Torque converter. Tighten the bolts to 33-43 ft. lbs. (44-59 Nm).

    Transmission. Tighten the large bolts to 29-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm) and the small bolts to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm).
     
    Transmission mount and crossmember. Tighten the mount and crossmember fasteners to 30-38 ft. lbs. (41-52 Nm).
     
    Torque converter. Tighten the bolts to 33-43 ft. lbs. (44-59 Nm).

NOTE
Before removing the transmission remove the crankshaft position sensor (POS) from the transmission assembly.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Drain the transmission fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove the transmission fluid indicator. Remove the left fender protector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft position sensor (POS) from the transmission. Do not disassemble it. Do not place it in an area affected by magnetism.
  10.  
  11. Remove the engine under covers. Remove the front crossmember. Remove the starter. Remove the rear driveshaft.
  12.  
  13. If equipped with a 4.0L engine, remove the left and right exhaust tubes.
  14.  
  15. Remove the selector control cable and bracket from the transmission. Disconnect and plug the cooler lines.
  16.  
  17. Remove the dust cover from the torque converter housing. Remove the torque converter to flex plate retaining bolts. There are four of them.
    NOTE
    Always rotate the crankshaft in the clockwise direction as viewed from the front of the engine.

  19. Support the transmission using a suitable jack.
  20.  
  21. Remove the insulator retaining nuts. Remove the crossmember retaining bolts. Remove the crossmember.
    NOTE
    Be sure that the transmission is properly supported.

  23. Tilt the transmission slightly to gain clearance between the body and the transmission, and then remove the air breather hose and the breather tube.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the transmission harness connector. Remove the wiring harness from the retainers. Remove the fluid indicator pipe.
  26.  
  27. Remove the transmission to engine retaining bolts. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. After installing the torque converter to the transmission, check dimension -A- to be sure it is within specification. Specification is 0.98 inch or more.

  5. Torque the transmission to engine retaining bolts to specification and in the proper sequence. Torque bolts to 55 ft. lbs if equipped with 4.0L engine. If equipped with 2.5L engine, see illustration.

NOTE
Before removing the transmission remove the crankshaft position sensor (POS) from the transmission assembly.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Drain the transmission fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove the transmission fluid indicator. Remove the left fender protector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft position sensor (POS) from the transmission. Do not disassemble it. Do not place it in an area affected by magnetism.
  10.  
  11. On frontier, remove the air dam.
  12.  
  13. Remove the engine under covers. Remove the front crossmember. Remove the starter. Remove the rear driveshaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the left and right exhaust tubes.
  16.  
  17. Remove the selector control cable and bracket from the transmission. Disconnect and plug the cooler lines.
  18.  
  19. Remove the dust cover from the torque converter housing. Remove the torque converter to flex plate retaining bolts. There are four of them.
    NOTE
    Always rotate the crankshaft in the clockwise direction as viewed from the front of the engine.

  21. Support the transmission using a suitable jack.
  22.  
  23. Remove the insulator retaining nuts. Remove the crossmember retaining bolts. Remove the crossmember.
    NOTE
    Be sure that the transmission is properly supported.

  25. Tilt the transmission slightly to gain clearance between the body and the transmission, and then remove the air breather hose and the breather tube.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the transmission harness connector. Disconnect the 4LO switch connector, wait detection switch connector, ATP switch connector and the transfer control device connector.
  28.  
  29. Remove the wiring harness from the retainers. Remove the fluid indicator pipe.
  30.  
  31. Remove the transmission to engine retaining bolts. Remove the transmission from the vehicle, with the transfer case attached.
  32.  
  33. As required, remove the transfer case from the transmission.
  34.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. After installing the torque converter to the transmission, check dimension -A- to be sure it is within specification. Specification is 0.98 inch or more.
  4.  
  5. Torque the transmission to engine retaining bolts to specification and in the proper sequence. Torque bolts to 55 ft. lbs.
