Adjustment

NOTE
Inspect the drive belt tension when the engine is cold.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Inspect belt tension at a point on the belt midway between the pulleys.
  4.
  5. Check the tension using gauge BT3373-F or equivalent.
    NOTE
When checking tension or deflection immediately after installation, first adjust it to the specified value. Then after turning the crankshaft two turns or more, readjust to the specified value to avoid variation in deflection between the pulleys. Tighten the idler pulley locknut by hand and measure the deflection or tension without looseness.

Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

Removal & Installation

2.5L Engine
