Removal & Installation




NOTE
Do not loosen front engine mounting insulator cover securing bolts. When cover is removed, damper oil flows out and mounting insulator will not function.

  1. Remove engine undercover and hood.
  2.  
  3. Drain coolant from cylinder block and radiator.
  4.  
  5. Remove vacuum hoses, fuel tubes, wires, harnesses and connectors.
  6.  
  7. Before disconnecting fuel hose, release fuel pressure from fuel line.
  8.  
  9. Remove radiator with shroud and cooling fan.
  10.  
  11. Remove drive belts.
  12.  
  13. Discharge refrigerant.
  14.  
  15. Remove A/C compressor manifold.
  16.  
  17. Remove power steering oil pump from engine.
  18.  
  19. Remove front exhaust tubes.
  20.  
  21. Remove transmission from vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Install engine slingers. Tighten the slinger bolts to 15-20 ft. lbs. (20-26 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Hoist engine with engine slingers and remove engine mounting nuts from both sides.
  26.  
  27. Lift and remove engine from vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Installation is the reverse of removal. See the accompanying illustration for installation torques.

NOTE
Be sure to disarm the SRS system, prior to working on the vehicle. Turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least three minutes before starting any work.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Properly release the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the radiator. Drain the engine oil. Drain the automatic transmission fluid, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark and remove the hood.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine cover. Remove the air duct and the air cleaner assembly.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the vacuum hose between the vehicle and the engine and position it to the side.
  12.  
  13. Remove the coolant hoses. Remove the radiator.
  14.  
  15. Remove the drive belts. Remove the cooling fan.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the engine electrical harness from the engine side and position it to the side.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the engine harness ground wires.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the power steering reservoir tank and position it to the side.
  22.  
  23. Remove the power steering pump from the engine and position it to the side.
  24.  
  25. Remove the air conditioning compressor retaining bolts. Position the air conditioning compressor to the side.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum line. Disconnect the EVAP line.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the fuel line hoses at the engine side connection.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect and plug the heater hoses at the cowl.
  32.  
  33. Remove the automatic transmission oil level indicator stick and tube assembly, if equipped.
  34.  
  35. If equipped with 4WD, remove the final drive assembly.
  36.  
  37. Remove the three way catalyst.
  38.  
  39. Properly support the engine using an engine support tool.
  40.  
  41. Remove the transmission.
  42.  
  43. Connect a suitable engine lifting fixture and remove the engine from the vehicle.
    NOTE
    Before lifting the engine check to be sure that all necessary electrical connections, vacuum lines and grounding wires have been disconnected, so as not to interfere with the engine removal. Also, check that all mounting bolts have been removed before lifting the engine from the vehicle.


    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the drive plate. Avoid deforming and damaging the signal plate teeth, on the drive plate. If the drive plate is removed from the engine, position it with the signal plate surface facing other than downward. Keep magnetic materials away from the signal plate.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to fill the engine with the proper grade and type engine oil and engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Be sure to fill the automatic transmission with the proper grade and type transmission fluid, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks, correct as required.
  8.  

2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

NOTE
