Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm bushing with a press.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the control arm bushings with liquid soap.
  2.  
  3. Install the bushings with a press.
  4.  
  5. Install the control arm to the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm bushing with a press.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the control arm bushings with liquid soap.
  2.  
  3. Install the bushings with a press.
  4.  
  5. Install the control arm to the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm bushing with a press.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the control arm bushings with liquid soap.
  2.  
  3. Install the bushings with a press.
  4.  
  5. Install the control arm to the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm bushing with a press.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the control arm bushings with liquid soap.

  3. Install the bushings with a press.
  4.  
  5. Install the control arm to the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Axle halfshaft, if equipped
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Control arm mounting bolts
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten the mount bolts to 80-105 ft. lbs. (108-142 Nm).
     
    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 87-141 ft. lbs. (118-191 Nm).
     
    Axle halfshaft, if equipped
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Axle halfshaft, if equipped
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Control arm mounting bolts
     
    Lower control arm
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten the mount bolts to 80-105 ft. lbs. (108-142 Nm).
     
    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 87-141 ft. lbs. (118-191 Nm).
     
    Axle halfshaft, if equipped
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten the mount bolts to 80-105 ft. lbs. (108-142 Nm).
     
    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 87-141 ft. lbs. (118-191 Nm).
     
    Axle halfshaft, if equipped
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Front wheel

  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten the mount bolts to 80-105 ft. lbs. (108-142 Nm).
     
    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 87-141 ft. lbs. (118-191 Nm).
     
    Axle halfshaft, if equipped
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Axle halfshaft, if equipped
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Control arm mounting bolts
     
    Lower control arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm. Tighten the mount bolts to 80-105 ft. lbs. (108-142 Nm).
     
    Lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 87-141 ft. lbs. (118-191 Nm).
     
    Axle halfshaft, if equipped
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower strut bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer bar connecting rod lower nut. Separate the connecting rod from the lower link.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with 4WD, remove the halfshaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the pinch bolt from the steering knuckle. Separate the lower control arm ball joint stud from the steering knuckle, using the proper tool.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower control arm adjusting bolts and nuts. Lower the control arm and remove it from the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the jounce bumper from the lower control arm.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to replace all wearable components, as required.
    NOTE
    Some vehicles may be equipped with straight (non-adjustable) lower control arm bolts and washers. In order to adjust camber and caster on these vehicles, first replace the lower control arm bolts and washers with adjustable (cam) bolts and washers.

  5. Check and adjust the front alignment, as required.
    NOTE
    After removing/installing or replacing steering and suspension components which effect wheel alignment or after adjusting wheel alignment, or the steering angle sensor or the ABS actuator electrical unit be sure to adjust the neutral position of the steering angle sensor before running the vehicle.

  7. Position the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.
  8.  
  9. Drive the vehicle at 10 mph for more than 10 minutes.
  10.  
  11. When this procedure is complete the SLP indicator lamp and the VDC OFF indicator lamp will turn off.
