Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly

Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the strut from the vehicle and position it in a suitable holding fixture.
  6.  
  7. Loosen, but do not remove, the piston rod nut.
    CAUTION
    Do not remove the piston rod nut at this time.

  9. Using a spring compressor tool, compress the spring until the strut mounting insulator can be turned by hand.
  10.  
  11. Remove the piston rod and locknut. Discard the locknut. Do not reuse it.
  12.  
  13. Remove the components from the strut.
  14.  
  15. Check and replace components, as necessary.
  16.  
  17. Check the free spring height. Specification is 13.6 inches for 2WD and 14.0 inches for 4WD.
  18.  
  19. When installing the coil spring on the strut be sure it is positioned properly.

  21. Continue the assembly in the reverse order of the disassembly.

  23. Install the strut.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Steering knuckle bracket bolts
     
    Upper strut mount nuts
     
    Strut

To install:


NOTE
Use new nuts and bolts for assembly.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut. Tighten the upper strut mount nuts to 29-40 ft. lbs. (39-54 Nm) and the knuckle bracket bolts to 111-122 ft. lbs. (151-165 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar link. Tighten the nut to 61-76 ft. lbs. (83-103 Nm).
     
    Front wheel

  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable jack, support the lower link.
  8.  
  9. Remove the connecting rod upper joints from the stabilizer bar. Move the stabilizer out of the way.
  10.  
  11. Remove the strut lower bolt and nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the three upper strut mounting nuts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the strut from the vehicle.
    NOTE
    Turn the steering knuckle to gain clearance for removal.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
