Upper Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm bushing with a press.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the control arm bushings with liquid soap.
  2.  
  3. Install the bushings with a press.
  4.  
  5. Install the control arm to the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm bushing with a press.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the control arm bushings with liquid soap.
  2.  
  3. Install the bushings with a press.
  4.  
  5. Install the control arm to the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm bushing with a press.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the control arm bushings with liquid soap.
  2.  
  3. Install the bushings with a press.
  4.  
  5. Install the control arm to the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Remove the control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm bushing with a press.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the control arm bushings with liquid soap.
  2.  
  3. Install the bushings with a press.
  4.  
  5. Install the control arm to the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
  8.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Upper ball joint
     
    Control arm mounting bolts
     
    Upper control arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm. Tighten the mounting bolts to 72-87 ft. lbs. (98-118 Nm).
     
    Upper ball joint. Tighten the nut to 58-108 ft. lbs. (78-147 Nm).
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.

  1. Remove shock absorber.
  2.  
  3. Separate upper ball joint stud from knuckle spindle.
  4.  


CAUTION
Support lower link with jack.

  1. Put matching marks on adjusting bolts and remove adjusting bolts.
  2.  

To install:

  1. While aligning the adjusting bolts with the matching marks, install the upper link. If a new upper link or any other suspension part is installed, align the matching mark with the slit as indicated in the accompanying figure, then install the upper link.
  2.  
  3. Install shock absorber.
  4.  
  5. Tighten adjusting bolts under unladen condition (fuel, radiator coolant, and engine oil full; with spare tire, jack, hand tools, and mats in designated positions) with tires on ground. See the accompanying illustrations for the proper torques.
  6.  
  7. After installing, check wheel alignment. Adjust if necessary.

  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Support the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Upper ball joint
     
    Control arm mounting bolts
     
    Upper control arm
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm. Tighten the mounting bolts to 72-87 ft. lbs. (98-118 Nm).
     
    Upper ball joint. Tighten the nut to 58-108 ft. lbs. (78-147 Nm).
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove shock absorber.
  6.  
  7. Separate upper ball joint stud from knuckle spindle.

To install:

  3. Install shock absorber.
  4.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable jack, support the lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. If working on the left side, remove the bolt from the lower joint of the lower joint shaft, then reposition the lower joint shaft out of the way. Do not damage the lower joint.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the upper control arm ball joint.
  12.  
  13. Separate the upper control arm ball joint stud from the steering knuckle, using tool ST29020001 (J-24319-01) or equivalent.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper control arm retaining bolts and nuts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to replace all wearable components, as required.
  4.  
  5. Check and adjust the front alignment, as required.
    NOTE
    After removing/installing or replacing steering and suspension components which effect wheel alignment or after adjusting wheel alignment, or the steering angle sensor or the ABS actuator electrical unit be sure to adjust the neutral position of the steering angle sensor before running the vehicle.

  7. Position the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.
  8.  
  9. Drive the vehicle at 10 mph for more than 10 minutes.
  10.  
  11. When this procedure is complete the SLP indicator lamp and the VDC OFF indicator lamp will turn off.
