Removal & Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the negative battery cable, wait for at least 3 minutes before working on the steering column or instrument panel.

  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  6.  
  7. Remove the driver-s side air bag and steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Place the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
    2.  
    3. Remove the lower lid from the steering wheel and disconnect the air bag module connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the side lids from both sides of the steering wheel.
    6.  
    7. Using the Tamper Resistant Torx® tool T50, remove the left and right Torx® bolts.
    8.  
    9. Carefully, remove the air bag module.
      CAUTION
      Place the air bag module in safe place with the front facing upward.

    10.  
    11. Remove the steering wheel nut.
    12.  
    13. Using a steering wheel puller, press the steering wheel from the steering column.
    14.

  9. Remove the passenger-s side air bag by performing the following procedure:
    1. Remove the glove box clips and disconnect the passenger-s side air bag module connector.
    2.  
    3. Remove the lower panel screws; then, disconnect the harness connector and remove the air bag module bracket.
    4.  
    5. Using the Tamper Resistant Torx® tool T50, remove the passenger-s side air bag module bolts.
    6.  
    7. Carefully, remove the air bag module.
      CAUTION
      Place the air bag module in safe place with the front facing upward.

    8.

  11. Remove the instrument panel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Remove the steering column cover and the combination switch.
    2.  
    3. Remove the instrument panel side lower finisher.
    4.  
    5. At the driver-s side, remove the lower panel screws, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the panel.
    6.  
    7. Remove the cluster lid -A- screws and the cluster lid -A-.
    8.  
    9. Remove the combination meter screws, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the combination meter.
    10.  
    11. Remove the cluster lid -C- screws, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the cluster lid -C-.
    12.  
    13. Remove the audio assembly screws and the audio assembly.
    14.  
    15. Remove the air conditioning control unit screws, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and the air conditioning control unit.
    16.  
    17. Remove the ashtray.
    18.  
    19. Remove the shifter (automatic transmission) or shift lever boot (manual transmission); then, remove the screw and disconnect the harness connector.
    20.  
    21. Remove the console box; then, remove the screw and disconnect the harness connector.
    22.  
    23. Remove the lower instrument center panel screws and the lower instrument center panel.
    24.  
    25. Remove the defroster grille.
    26.  
    27. At both sides, remove the pillar garnishes.
    28.  
    29. Remove the instrument panel and pads nuts and bolts.
    30.  
    31. Using an assistant, remove the instrument panel.
    32.  

  12.  
  13. Remove the defroster nozzle and the heater nozzle from the heater housing.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the electrical connector and/or control cable from the heater housing.
  16.  
  17. Remove the heater housing-to-chassis fasteners and remove the heater housing.
  18.  
  19. Separate the heater core from the heater housing and remove the heater core.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core and assemble the heater housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the heater housing and the heater housing-to-chassis fasteners.
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical connector and/or control cable to the heater housing.
  6.  
  7. Install the defroster nozzle and the heater nozzle to the heater housing.
  8.  
  9. Install the passenger-s side air bag by performing the following procedure:
    1. Carefully, install the air bag module.
    2.  
    3. Using the Tamper Resistant Torx® tool T50, install the passenger-s side air bag module bolts. Torque the bolts to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Connect the harness connector and install the air bag module bracket; then, install the lower panel screws.
    6.  
    7. Connect the passenger-s side air bag module connector and install the glove box clips.
    8.

  11. Install the instrument panel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Using an assistant, position the instrument panel.
    2.  
    3. Install the instrument pads, nuts and bolts.
    4.  
    5. At both sides, install the pillar garnishes.
    6.  
    7. Install the defroster grille.
    8.  
    9. Install the lower instrument center panel and the lower instrument center panel screws.
    10.  
    11. Install the console box; then, install the screw and connect the harness connector.
    12.  
    13. Connect the harness connector and install the screw; then, install the shifter (automatic transmission) or shift lever boot (manual transmission).
    14.  
    15. Install the ashtray.
    16.  
    17. Install the air conditioning control unit, connect the electrical harness connectors and the air conditioning control unit screws.
    18.  
    19. Install the audio assembly and the audio assembly screws.
    20.  
    21. Install the cluster lid -C-, connect the electrical harness connectors and install the cluster lid -C- screws.
    22.  
    23. Install the combination meter, connect the electrical harness connectors and install the combination meter screws.
    24.  
    25. Install the cluster lid -A- and the cluster lid -A- screws.
    26.  
    27. At the driver-s side, install the lower panel, connect the electrical harness connectors and install the panel screws.
    28.  
    29. Install the instrument panel side lower finisher.
    30.  
    31. Install the combination switch and the steering column cover.
    32.  

  12.  
  13. Install the driver-s side air bag and steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Install the steering wheel to the steering column.
    2.  
    3. Install the steering wheel nut. Torque the nut to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Carefully, install the air bag module.
    6.  
    7. Using the Tamper Resistant Torx® tool T50, install the left and right Torx® bolts. Torque the bolts to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-20 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install the side lids to both sides of the steering wheel.
    10.  
    11. Connect the air bag module connector and install the lower lid to the steering wheel.
    12.  

  14.  
  15. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core.
  16.  
  17. Refill the cooling system.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  
  21. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
  22.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the negative battery cable, wait for at least 3 minutes before working on the steering column or instrument panel.

  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  6.  
  7. Remove the driver-s side air bag and steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Place the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
    2.  
    3. Remove the lower lid from the steering wheel and disconnect the air bag module connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the side lids from both sides of the steering wheel.
    6.  
    7. Using the Tamper Resistant Torx® tool T50, remove the left and right Torx® bolts.
    8.  
    9. Carefully, remove the air bag module.
      CAUTION
      Place the air bag module in safe place with the front facing upward.

    10.  
    11. Remove the steering wheel nut.
    12.  
    13. Using a steering wheel puller, press the steering wheel from the steering column.
    14.

  9. Remove the passenger-s side air bag by performing the following procedure:
    1. Remove the glove box clips and disconnect the passenger-s side air bag module connector.
    2.  
    3. Remove the lower panel screws; then, disconnect the harness connector and remove the air bag module bracket.
    4.  
    5. Using the Tamper Resistant Torx® tool T50, remove the passenger-s side air bag module bolts.
    6.  
    7. Carefully, remove the air bag module.
      CAUTION
      Place the air bag module in safe place with the front facing upward.

    8.

  11. Remove the instrument panel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Remove the steering column cover and the combination switch.
    2.  
    3. Remove the instrument panel side lower finisher.
    4.  
    5. At the driver-s side, remove the lower panel screws, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the panel.
    6.  
    7. Remove the cluster lid -A- screws and the cluster lid -A-.
    8.  
    9. Remove the combination meter screws, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the combination meter.
    10.  
    11. Remove the cluster lid -C- screws, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the cluster lid -C-.
    12.  
    13. Remove the audio assembly screws and the audio assembly.
    14.  
    15. Remove the air conditioning control unit screws, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and the air conditioning control unit.
    16.  
    17. Remove the ashtray.
    18.  
    19. Remove the shifter (automatic transmission) or shift lever boot (manual transmission); then, remove the screw and disconnect the harness connector.
    20.  
    21. Remove the console box; then, remove the screw and disconnect the harness connector.
    22.  
    23. Remove the lower instrument center panel screws and the lower instrument center panel.
    24.  
    25. Remove the defroster grille.
    26.  
    27. At both sides, remove the pillar garnishes.
    28.  
    29. Remove the instrument panel and pads nuts and bolts.
    30.  
    31. Using an assistant, remove the instrument panel.
    32.  

  12.  
  13. Remove the defroster nozzle and the heater nozzle from the heater housing.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the electrical connector and/or control cable from the heater housing.
  16.  
  17. Remove the heater housing-to-chassis fasteners and remove the heater housing.
  18.  
  19. Separate the heater core from the heater housing and remove the heater core.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core and assemble the heater housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the heater housing and the heater housing-to-chassis fasteners.
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical connector and/or control cable to the heater housing.
  6.  
  7. Install the defroster nozzle and the heater nozzle to the heater housing.
  8.  
  9. Install the passenger-s side air bag by performing the following procedure:
    1. Carefully, install the air bag module.
    2.  
    3. Using the Tamper Resistant Torx® tool T50, install the passenger-s side air bag module bolts. Torque the bolts to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Connect the harness connector and install the air bag module bracket; then, install the lower panel screws.
    6.  
    7. Connect the passenger-s side air bag module connector and install the glove box clips.
    8.

  11. Install the instrument panel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Using an assistant, position the instrument panel.
    2.  
    3. Install the instrument pads, nuts and bolts.
    4.  
    5. At both sides, install the pillar garnishes.
    6.  
    7. Install the defroster grille.
    8.  
    9. Install the lower instrument center panel and the lower instrument center panel screws.
    10.  
    11. Install the console box; then, install the screw and connect the harness connector.
    12.  
    13. Connect the harness connector and install the screw; then, install the shifter (automatic transmission) or shift lever boot (manual transmission).
    14.  
    15. Install the ashtray.
    16.  
    17. Install the air conditioning control unit, connect the electrical harness connectors and the air conditioning control unit screws.
    18.  
    19. Install the audio assembly and the audio assembly screws.
    20.  
    21. Install the cluster lid -C-, connect the electrical harness connectors and install the cluster lid -C- screws.
    22.  
    23. Install the combination meter, connect the electrical harness connectors and install the combination meter screws.
    24.  
    25. Install the cluster lid -A- and the cluster lid -A- screws.
    26.  
    27. At the driver-s side, install the lower panel, connect the electrical harness connectors and install the panel screws.
    28.  
    29. Install the instrument panel side lower finisher.
    30.  
    31. Install the combination switch and the steering column cover.
    32.  

  12.  
  13. Install the driver-s side air bag and steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Install the steering wheel to the steering column.
    2.  
    3. Install the steering wheel nut. Torque the nut to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Carefully, install the air bag module.
    6.  
    7. Using the Tamper Resistant Torx® tool T50, install the left and right Torx® bolts. Torque the bolts to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-20 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install the side lids to both sides of the steering wheel.
    10.  
    11. Connect the air bag module connector and install the lower lid to the steering wheel.
    12.  

  14.  
  15. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core.
  16.  
  17. Refill the cooling system.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  
  21. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.

Removal & Installation
Front System
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core tubes in the engine compartment.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the heater unit air ducts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 heater retaining bolts.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the electrical connector from the door motors.
  12.  
  13. Remove the heater assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the heater pipe cover plate, then remove the heater core retainer.
  16.  
  17. Remove the heater core shutoff valve control rod.
  18.  
  19. Remove the heater core from the heater unit.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core into the heater unit.
  2.  
  3. Install the heater core shutoff valve control rod.
  4.  
  5. Install the heater core retainer and the heater pipe cover plate.
  6.  
  7. Install the heater assembly.
  8.  
  9. Connect the electrical connector to the door motors.
  10.  
  11. Install the 2 heater retaining bolts.
  12.  
  13. Connect the heater unit air ducts.
  14.  
  15. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core tubes in the engine compartment.
  16.  
  17. Refill the cooling system.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  
  21. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; the check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
  22.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core tubes in the engine compartment.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the heater unit air ducts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 heater retaining bolts.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the electrical connector from the door motors.

  13. Remove the heater assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the heater pipe cover plate, then remove the heater core retainer.
  16.  
  17. Remove the heater core shutoff valve control rod.
  18.  
  19. Remove the heater core from the heater unit.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core into the heater unit.
  2.  
  3. Install the heater core shutoff valve control rod.
  4.  
  5. Install the heater core retainer and the heater pipe cover plate.
  6.  
  7. Install the heater assembly.
  8.  
  9. Connect the electrical connector to the door motors.
  10.  
  11. Install the 2 heater retaining bolts.
  12.  
  13. Connect the heater unit air ducts.
  14.  
  15. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core tubes in the engine compartment.
  16.  
  17. Refill the cooling system.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  
  21. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; the check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
  22.  

Rear Auxiliary System
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the rear auxiliary heater core tubes.
  6.  
  7. Properly, discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
  8.  
  9. Remove the driver-s side rear trim panel and remove the bolts retaining the rear auxiliary heater/air conditioning housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper housing and the outer housing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the evaporator core and the heater core.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core and the evaporator core.
  2.  
  3. Install the outer housing and the upper housing.
  4.  
  5. Install the bolts retaining the rear auxiliary heater/air conditioning housing and the driver-s side rear trim panel.
  6.  
  7. Evacuate and charge and the air conditioning system.
  8.  
  9. Connect the heater hoses to the rear auxiliary heater core tubes.
  10.  
  11. Refill the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
  16.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the rear auxiliary heater core tubes.
  6.  
  7. Properly, discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
  8.  
  9. Remove the driver-s side rear trim panel and remove the bolts retaining the rear auxiliary heater/air conditioning housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper housing and the outer housing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the evaporator core and the heater core.

To install:

  1. Install the heater core and the evaporator core.
  2.  
  3. Install the outer housing and the upper housing.
  4.  
  5. Install the bolts retaining the rear auxiliary heater/air conditioning housing and the driver-s side rear trim panel.
  6.  
  7. Evacuate and charge and the air conditioning system.
  8.  
  9. Connect the heater hoses to the rear auxiliary heater core tubes.
  10.  
  11. Refill the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
