NOTE
Ignition timing is set with the engine at operating temperature, transmission in Neutral and all electrical accessories OFF .

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Attach a timing light to the No. 1 spark plug wire.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.
  6.  
  7. Check that the idle speed is less than 1000 rpm.
  8.  
  9. Run the engine at 2000 rpm for 2 minutes.
  10.  
  11. Rev the engine to 3000 rpm 2-3 times and allow it to idle for 1 minute.
  12.  
  13. Check for the presence of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) and service as necessary.
  14.  
  15. Run the engine at 2000 rpm for 2 minutes.
  16.  
  17. Stop the engine and disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and rev it to 3000 rpm 2-3 times and allow it to idle.
  20.  
  21. Set the base timing to 8-12 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC).
  22.  
  23. Tighten the distributor lockbolt to 83-113 inch lbs. (9-13 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Set the base idle speed to 700-800 rpm.
  26.  
  27. Stop the engine and connect the TP sensor.
