  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Shift lever
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
     
    Clutch slave cylinder
     
    Vehicle Speed (VSS) sensor connector
     
    Back-up lamp switch connector
     
    Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector
     
    Rear Heated Oxygen (HO2S) sensor connector
     
    Starter motor
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Exhaust mounting bracket
     
    Transmission mount and crossmember. Support the transmission.
     
    Transmission flange bolts
     
    Transmission

NOTE
The transmission flange bolts vary in length. Note their positions for assembly.

To install:

  1. Apply sealant to the transmission flange, engine block and engine rear plate as shown.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission. Tighten the large bolts to 29-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm) and the small bolts to 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm).
     
    Transmission mount and crossmember. Tighten the mount and crossmember fasteners to 30-38 ft. lbs. (41-52 Nm).

5-Speed



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Drain the transmission fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shift lever assembly. Remove the rear driveshaft. Remove the gusset.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector and remove the wire harness from the transmission.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the back up light switch and the PNP switch connectors.
  12.  
  13. Remove the clutch slave cylinder from the transmission. Remove the starter.
  14.  
  15. Support the transmission using a suitable jack.
  16.  
  17. Remove the transmission dust cover. Remove the transmission to engine retaining bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the nuts securing the insulator to the crossmember. Remove the crossmember retaining bolts. Remove the crossmember.
    NOTE
    Be sure that the transmission is properly supported.

  21. Remove the air breather hose and the breather tube.

  23. Separate the transmission from the engine and remove it from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  3. Torque the transmission to engine retaining bolts to specification and in the proper sequence.

  5. Start the engine and check for leaks, correct as required.
  6.  
  7. Roadtest the vehicle and check for vibrations, correct as required.

6-Speed



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Drain the transmission fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shift lever assembly. Remove the left fender protector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft position sensor (POS) from the transmission. Be careful not to damage the sensor edge.
  10.  
  11. Remove the undercovers. Remove the front crossmember. Remove the starter.
  12.  
  13. If equipped with 4WD, remove the front and rear driveshafts.
  14.  
  15. If equipped with 2WD, remove the rear driveshaft.
  16.  
  17. Remove the left and right front exhaust tubes. Remove the clutch slave cylinder from the transmission.
  18.  
  19. Support the transmission using a suitable jack.
  20.  
  21. Remove the nuts securing the insulator to the crossmember. Remove the crossmember retaining bolts. Remove the crossmember.
    NOTE
    Be sure that the transmission is properly supported.

  23. Tilt the transmission slightly to gain clearance between the body and the transmission, and then remove the air breather hose and the breather tube.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the back up light electrical connector and the PNP switch connector.
  26.  
  27. If equipped with 4WD, disconnect the 4LO switch connector, wait detection switch connector, ATP switch connector and the transfer control device connector.
  28.  
  29. Remove the wiring harness from the retainers.
  30.  
  31. Remove the transmission to engine retaining bolts. Separate the transmission from the engine and remove it from the vehicle.
  32.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Torque the transmission to engine retaining bolts to specification and in the proper sequence.
