Parking Brake Shoes

The rear drum brake shoes serve as the parking brakes. Refer to the procedures under Rear Drum Brakes.

Adjustment



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear half of the center console.
  4.  
  5. Rotate the adjusting nut and loosen the cable until the tension is sufficiently released.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rotor and measure the inner diameter at the widest point, using tool J-2117-A or equivalent.
  12.  
  13. Transfer the measurement, less 0.6 mm to the parking brake shoes and adjust accordingly.
  14.  
  15. Using the wheel nuts, secure the disc to the hub to prevent it from tilting.
  16.  
  17. Rotate the disc rotor to make sure that there is no drag.
  18.  
  19. Operate the control pedal ten times or more, with a force of 110 lbs.
  20.  
  21. Rotate the adjusting nut to adjust the lever stroke to specification. Lever stroke specification is 6-8 notches with a force of 44.1 lbs.

  23. With the parking brake pedal completely disengaged, make sure there is no drag on the parking brake.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    Clean the brakes with a vacuum dust collector to minimize the hazard of airborne particles or other materials.


    NOTE
    Remove the disc rotor with the parking brake completely disengaged.

  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Release the parking brake.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear wheels.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rotor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the adjuster.
  12.  
  13. Remove the, retainers, anti-rattle pins and shoes.
  14.  
  15. Remove the pin retainer. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the toggle lever.
  16.  
  17. Remove the back plate.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Assemble the adjuster so that the threaded part expands when rotating it in the direction shown by the arrow. Shorten the adjuster by rotating it in the opposite direction shown by the arrow.

  5. Perform the parking brake break-in operation as follows: Safely, drive forward at approximately 40 km/h (25 mph) with the parking brake set with a force of approx. 200 N (45 lbs.) for about 30 seconds.
  6.  
  7. After the break-in operation, check the pedal stroke of parking brake. Readjust if necessary.
    NOTE
    To prevent lining from getting too hot, allow a cool off period of approximately 5 minutes after every break-in operation.

  9. Check and adjust the parking brake pedal stroke. Correct as required.
