Axle Assembly

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels
     
    Stabilizer bar
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Brake fluid hose
     
    Axle vent tube
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness, if equipped
     
    Shock absorbers
     
    Spring shackles
     
    Axle assembly
     

  4.  

To install:


NOTE
Use new fasteners for assembly.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Axle assembly. Tighten the U-bolts to 72-80 ft. lbs. (98-108 Nm).
     
    Spring shackles. Tighten the nuts to 58-72 ft. lbs. (78-98 Nm).
     
    Shock absorbers. Tighten the nuts to 30-37 ft. lbs. (40-50 Nm).
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness, if equipped
     
    Driveshaft. Tighten the fasteners to 58-65 ft. lbs. (78-88 Nm).
     
    Axle vent tube
     
    Brake fluid hose
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Stabilizer bar. Tighten the bracket bolts to 32-41 ft. lbs. (43-55 Nm) and the link nuts to 30-35 ft. lbs. (41-47 Nm).
     
    Rear wheels
     

  2.  
  3. Bleed the rear brakes and check the rear axle lubricant level.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Drain the gear oil.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark and remove the rear driveshaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the axle shafts, backing plates and torque members.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the ABS sensor wire harness, parking brake cables and brake hoses.
    NOTE
    Position the wire harness, cable and hoses away from the final drive unit. Failure to do so may result in components being damaged during rear axle removal.

  13. Support the rear final drive (rear axle) using a suitable jack.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear shock absorber lower bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the leaf spring U-bolt nuts.
    NOTE
    Be sure to support the rear final drive (rear axle) using a suitable jack before removing the leaf spring U-bolt nuts.

  18.  
  19. Remove the assembly using a suitable jack.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to fill the assembly with the proper grade and type gear oil.
  4.  
  5. Bleed the brake system, as required.
  6.
