Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the vehicle at the frame.
  4.  
  5. Support the axle with a floor jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels
     
    Shock absorbers
     
    Axle U-bolts and spring pad
     
    Spring shackle
     
    Front mount bolt
     
    Leaf spring
     

  8.  

To install:


NOTE
Use new fasteners for assembly.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Leaf spring. Tighten the front mount bolt to 86-108 ft. lbs. (117-147 Nm).
     
    Spring shackle. Tighten the nuts to 58-72 ft. lbs. (78-98 Nm).
     
    Axle U-bolts and spring pad. Tighten the nuts to 72-80 ft. lbs. (98-108 Nm).
     
    Shock absorbers
     
    Rear wheels
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Support the vehicle at the frame.
  4.  
  5. Support the axle with a floor jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Axle U-bolts and spring pad
     
    Spring shackle
     
    Front mount bolt
     
    Leaf spring

To install:

    Leaf spring. Tighten the front mount bolt to 86-108 ft. lbs. (117-147 Nm).
     
    Spring shackle. Tighten the nuts to 58-72 ft. lbs. (78-98 Nm).

    Leaf spring. Tighten the front mount bolt to 86-108 ft. lbs. (117-147 Nm).
     
    Spring shackle. Tighten the nuts to 58-72 ft. lbs. (78-98 Nm).
     
    Axle U-bolts and spring pad. Tighten the nuts to 72-80 ft. lbs. (98-108 Nm).
     
    Shock absorbers

NOTE
When installing the components with rubber bushings, the final tightening of the nuts and bolts must be done with the vehicle in an unladen condition. Fuel, engine coolant and engine oil must be full. The spare tire, jack, hand tools and mats must be in their respective positions and all four tires must be on the ground.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. On Xterra, remove the spare tire and the right side tail pipe.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable jack, support the final drive assembly. Raise the jack slightly to remove the tension from the leaf spring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the four spring clip U-bolts nuts. Remove the spring pad.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear spring shackle and bushings.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear leaf spring front nut and bolt.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear spring from the vehicle.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the rear spring clip U-bolts nuts in an alternate fashion. Once complete the threads of the bolts should be exposed about 0.12 inch.
    NOTE
    When installing the components with rubber bushings, the final tightening of the nuts and bolts must be done with the vehicle in an unladen condition.
