REMOVAL

If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes to reflect how your engine is wired.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Set the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) with the number 1 piston on compression stroke.
  4.
  5. Remove and label the distributor spark plug wires from the distributor cap.
  6.
  7. Remove the distributor cap and scribe a mark on the engine block to show both rotor and distributor position prior to removal.
  8.
  9. Disconnect and label the wiring connections to the distributor.
  10.
  11. Remove the bolt(s) holding distributor to engine.
  12.
  13. Pull the distributor upward to remove from cylinder block.
  14.

Do not disturb the camshaft or crankshaft position after the distributor is removed from the engine. If any of the components are moved, TDC on cylinder 1 will have to be found again before reinstalling the distributor.

INSTALLATION

Engine Not Disturbed
  1. Install a new distributor housing O-ring.
  2.
  3. Install the distributor in the engine so the rotor is aligned with the matchmark on the housing and the housing is aligned with the matchmark on the engine. Make sure the distributor is fully seated and the distributor gear is fully engaged.
  4.
  5. Install and snug the hold-down bolt.
  6.
  7. Connect the distributor pickup lead wires.

  16.

Engine Disturbed
  1. Install a new distributor housing O-ring.
