  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the air intake duct from the dual duct housing.
  6.  
  7. Unplug the electrical connectors from the throttle body, the step motor AAC valve and the exhaust gas temperature sensor.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect and label the hoses from the valve cover, the throttle body, the step motor AAC valve, the EGR control valve and the air cut valve.
  10.  
  11. If the spark plug wires are in the way, disconnect them and move them aside. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper intake manifold collector-to-intake manifold bolts, in sequence, and lift the assembly from the intake manifold. Discard the gasket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lower intake manifold collector-to-intake manifold bolts, in sequence, and lift the assembly from the intake manifold. Discard the gasket.
  16.  
  17. If the fuel injector assembly is in the way, perform the following procedures:
    1. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the fuel injectors.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the fuel injector assembly from the fuel lines.
    4.

CAUTION
Observe all applicable safety precautions when working around fuel. Whenever servicing the fuel system, always work in a well ventilated area. Do not allow fuel spray or vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher near the work area. Always keep fuel in a container specifically designed for fuel storage; also, always properly seal fuel containers to avoid the possibility of fire or explosion.

    1. Remove the fuel rail-to-cylinder head bolts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the fuel rail assembly from the engine.
    4.  


  1. Remove the intake manifold-to-engine bolts, in sequence, lift the intake manifold from the engine and discard the gasket.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Use a new gasket and install the intake manifold by performing the following procedures:
    1. Torque the intake manifold-to-engine nuts/bolts, in sequence, to 2.2-3.6 ft. lbs. (3-5 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Torque the intake manifold-to-engine nuts/bolts, in sequence, to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-20 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Finally, torque the intake manifold-to-engine nuts/bolts, in sequence, to 17-20 ft. lbs. (24-27 Nm).
    6.

  5. If the fuel injector assembly was removed, perform the following procedures:
    1. Install the fuel rail assembly to the engine.
    2.  
    3. Install the fuel rail-to-cylinder head bolts and torque the bolts to 1.8-2.4 ft. lbs. (2.5-3.2 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Connect the fuel injector assembly to the fuel lines.
    6.  
    7. Connect the electrical connectors to the fuel injectors.
    8.

  7. Use a new gasket and install the lower intake manifold collector; torque the lower intake manifold collector-to-intake manifold bolts, in 2-3 steps, in sequence, to 13-16 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Use a new gasket and install the upper intake manifold collector-to-intake manifold; torque the bolts to 5.1-5.8 ft. lbs. (7-8 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the spark plug wires, if disconnected. Connect the accelerator cable to the throttle body.
  12.  
  13. Connect the hoses to the valve cover, the throttle body, the step motor AAC valve, the EGR control valve and the air cut valve.
  14.  
  15. Plug in the electrical connectors to the throttle body, the step motor AAC valve and the exhaust gas temperature sensor.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and check for oil leaks.
  20.

  1. Relieve the fuel system of pressure.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the electrical connectors from the throttle position sensor, the exhaust gas temperature sensor, etc.

  1. Label and disconnect the hoses from the throttle body, the EGR valve, the EGR control solenoid valve, the intake manifold collector, the power valve control solenoid valve (if equipped with a manual transaxle) and the power valve actuator (if equipped with a manual transaxle).

  1. Remove the three ignition coils from the rear cylinder bank.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the accelerator cable and cruise control cable, if equipped, from the throttle body.
  4.  
  5. Unbolt the rear manifold collector support brackets.
  6.

  1. Remove the intake manifold collector-to-intake manifold bolts and the intake manifold collector.

  1. If necessary, unplug the electrical connector from the camshaft position sensor and the power transistor.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the fuel injectors.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the fuel injector assembly from the fuel lines.
  6.

  1. Remove the fuel rail-to-cylinder head bolts.

  1. Unbolt the water pipe from the lower manifold.
  2.

  1. Remove the intake manifold-to-engine bolts, in sequence, by reversing the torquing sequence. Lift the intake manifold from the engine and discard the gasket.

To install:
  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install the intake manifold and torque the intake manifold-to-engine, in sequence, bolts to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-20 Nm) and the nuts to 17-20 ft. lbs. (24-27 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the fuel rail assembly to the engine.
  6.  
  7. Install the fuel rail-to-cylinder head bolts and torque the bolts to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-20 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the fuel injector assembly to the fuel lines.
  10.  
  11. Connect the electrical connectors to the fuel injectors.
  12.  
  13. Using a new gasket, install the intake manifold collector and torque the intake manifold collector-to-intake manifold bolts, in sequence, to 13-16 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the intake manifold collector support and torque the bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Connect the accelerator cable and cruise control cable, if equipped, to the throttle body.
  18.  
  19. Connect the hoses to the throttle body, the EGR valve, the EGR control solenoid valve, the intake manifold collector, the power valve control solenoid valve (if equipped with a manual transaxle) and the power valve actuator (if equipped with a manual transaxle).
  20.  
  21. If disconnected, plug in the electrical connectors to the camshaft position sensor and the power transistor.
  22.  
  23. Install the ignition coils to the rear cylinder bank.
  24.  
  25. Plug in the electrical connectors from the throttle position sensor, the exhaust gas temperature sensor, etc.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
  28.  
  29. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  30.

  1. Relieve the fuel system of pressure.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the coolant from the engine.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air intake duct from the throttle body.
  8.  
  9. Unplug the throttle position sensor connectors and the ignition coils.
  10.  
  11. Tag and disconnect any hoses that would interfere with manifold removal.
  12.  
  13. Unbolt the EGR tube from the manifold collector.
  14.  
  15. Unbolt the manifold collector supports that connect to the rear cylinder head.
  16.  
  17. Remove the intake manifold collector bolts and lift it from the engine.
  18.  
  19. Unplug the fuel injector harness connectors. If necessary, mark them for identification to avoid mixing them up.
  20.  
  21. Remove the fuel rail assembly.
  22.  
  23. Remove the intake manifold in the reverse order of installation. Refer to the illustration. Discard the gaskets.
  24.  

To install:
  1. Using new gaskets, place the lower intake manifold onto the engine.
  2.  
  3. Torque the lower intake manifold, in two steps, as shown in the illustration. First, tighten the bolts and nuts in order to 3.6-7.2 ft.lbs. (5-10 Nm.). Tighten the bolts and nuts again to 20-23 ft.lbs. (26-31 Nm.). Go over the sequence at least five times to ensure equal torque on all fasteners.
  4.  
  5. Using new O-rings on the injectors, install the fuel rail to the manifold. Follow the illustration and torque the fuel rail bolts to 6.9-8.0 ft.lbs. (9.3-10.8 Nm.). Tighten the bolts again to 15-20 ft.lbs. (21-26 Nm.).
  6.  
  7. Plug in the fuel injector harness connectors.
  8.  
  9. Using a new gasket, install the intake manifold collector. Following the sequence shown in the illustration, torque the bolts to 13-16 ft.lbs. (18-22 Nm.).
  10.  
  11. Install the EGR guide tube to the manifold collector.
  12.  
  13. Connect any hoses that were previously removed.
  14.  
  15. Plug in the throttle position sensor connectors and the ignition coils.
  16.  
  17. Install the air intake duct to the throttle body.
  18.  
  19. Refill the engine with coolant.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine and check for proper engine operation.
  24.
