Rocker Arm (Valve) Cover

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



VG30E Engine
front bank
  1. Disconnect the air intake duct from the dual duct housing.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the throttle body, the step motor AAC valve and the exhaust gas temperature sensor.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and label the hoses from the valve cover, the throttle body, the step motor AAC valve, the EGR control valve and the air cut valve.
  6.  
  7. If the spark plug wires are in the way, disconnect them and move them aside. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper intake manifold collector-to-intake manifold bolts, in sequence, and lift the assembly from the intake manifold. Discard the gasket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the valve cover-to-cylinder head bolts and the valve cover; discard the gasket.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install a new valve cover gasket. Install the valve cover and torque the bolts to 0.7-2.2 ft. lbs. (1-3 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Use a new gasket and install the upper intake manifold collector-to-intake manifold; torque the bolts, in sequence, to 5.1-5.8 ft. lbs. (7-8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the spark plug wires, if disconnected. Connect the accelerator cable to the throttle body.
  8.  
  9. Connect the hoses to the valve cover, the throttle body, the step motor AAC valve, the EGR control valve and the air cut valve.
  10.  
  11. Connect the electrical connectors to the throttle body, the step motor AAC valve and the exhaust gas temperature sensor.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for oil leaks.
  16.

  1. Remove the breather hose from the valve cover.
  2.  
  3. If the spark plug wires are in the way, disconnect them and move them aside.
  4.  
  5. Tag and disconnect any hoses or lines in the way of removing the valve cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the valve cover-to-cylinder head bolts and the valve cover; discard the gasket(s).
  8.  

To install:
  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install a new valve cover gasket. Install the valve cover and torque the bolts to 0.7-2.2 ft. lbs. (1-3 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the spark plug wires, if disconnected.
  6.  
  7. Install the breather hose to the valve cover.
  8.  
  9. Connect any hoses or lines that were removed.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for oil leaks.
  14.  

VE30DE Engine

See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coils.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil-to-valve cover bolts and the ignition coils.
  6.  
  7. If necessary, disconnect the electrical connectors from the camshaft sensor and the power transistor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the valve cover-to-cylinder head nuts and the valve cover. Discard the gasket.

To install:
  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Using liquid gasket sealant, apply a continuous bead to the cylinder head and the valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Using a new gasket, install it onto the cylinder head. Install the valve cover and torque the nuts in the following order:
    1. Torque the nuts, in the following sequence: 1, 2, 12, 11, 9 and 14 to 2.9 ft. lbs. (4 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Torque the nuts, in the sequence of 1 through 14 to 5.8-7.2 ft. lbs. (8-10 Nm).

  1. Connect the electrical connectors to the camshaft position sensor and the power transistor, if disconnected.
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition coils and torque the ignition coil-to-valve cover bolts to 2.7-3.7 ft. lbs. (3.7-5.0 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical connectors to the ignition coils.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for oil leaks.
  10.

See Figure 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Label and disconnect the hoses from the throttle body, the EGR valve, the EGR control solenoid valve, the intake manifold collector, the power valve control solenoid valve (if equipped with a manual transaxle) and the power valve actuator (if equipped with a manual transaxle).
  4.  
  5. Label and disconnect the electrical connectors from the throttle position sensor, the exhaust gas temperature sensor, power valve actuator, etc.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body.
  8.  
  9. Remove the intake manifold collector support-to-intake manifold collector and the intake manifold collector support-to-cylinder head bolts and the supports.
  10.  
  11. Remove the intake manifold collector-to-intake manifold bolts and the intake manifold collector.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coils.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition coil-to-valve cover bolts and the ignition coils.
  16.  
  17. Remove the valve cover-to-cylinder head nuts and the valve cover. Discard the gasket.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Thoroughly clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Using liquid gasket sealant, apply a continuous bead to the cylinder head and the valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Using a new valve cover gasket, install it onto the cylinder head. Install the valve cover and torque the nuts in the following order:
    1. Torque the nuts, in the following sequence: 1, 2, 12, 11, 9 and 14 to 2.9 ft. lbs. (4 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Torque the nuts, in the sequence of 1 through 14 to 5.8-7.2 ft. lbs. (8-10 Nm).

  1. Install the ignition coils and torque the ignition coil-to-valve cover bolts to 2.7-3.7 ft. lbs. (3.7-5.0 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Using a new gasket, install the intake manifold collector and torque the intake manifold collector-to-intake manifold bolts, in sequence, to 13-16 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the intake manifold collector support and torque the bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the accelerator cable to the throttle body.
  8.  
  9. Connect the hoses to the throttle body, the EGR valve, the EGR control solenoid valve, the intake manifold collector, the power valve control solenoid valve (if equipped with a manual transaxle) and the power valve actuator (if equipped with a manual transaxle).
  10.  
  11. Connect the electrical connectors from the throttle position sensor, the exhaust gas temperature sensor, etc.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  16.  

VQ30DE Engine
front bank

See Figure 6

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the decorative facia on the valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coils.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coil-to-valve cover bolts and the ignition coils.
  8.  
  9. If necessary, disconnect the electrical connectors from the camshaft sensor and the power transistor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the valve cover-to-cylinder head nuts and the valve cover. Discard the gasket.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Using liquid gasket sealant, apply a continuous bead to the cylinder head and the valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Using a new gasket, install it onto the cylinder head. Install the valve cover and torque the nuts in the following order:
    1. Torque the nuts, 1 through 10, in sequence, to 9-36 in.lbs. (1-3 Nm.).
    2.  
    3. Torque the nuts, 1 through 10, in sequence, to 47.7-65.1 in.lbs. (5.4-7.4 Nm.).

  1. Connect the electrical connectors to the camshaft sensor and the power transistor, if disconnected.
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition coils and tighten the ignition coil-to-valve cover bolts.
  4.  
  5. Connect the electrical connectors to the ignition coils.
  6.  
  7. Install the decorative facia cover.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for oil leaks.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Label and disconnect the hoses from the throttle body, the EGR valve, the EGR control solenoid valve, the intake manifold collector, the power valve control solenoid valve (if equipped with a manual transaxle) and the power valve actuator (if equipped with a manual transaxle).
  4.  
  5. Label and disconnect the electrical connectors from the throttle position sensor, the exhaust gas temperature sensor, power valve actuator, etc.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body.
  8.  
  9. Remove the intake manifold collector support-to-intake manifold collector and the intake manifold collector support-to-cylinder head bolts and the supports.
  10.  
  11. Remove the intake manifold collector-to-intake manifold bolts and the intake manifold collector.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coils.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition coil-to-valve cover bolts and the ignition coils.
  16.  
  17. Remove the valve cover-to-cylinder head nuts and the valve cover. Discard the gasket.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Thoroughly clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Using liquid gasket sealant, apply a continuous bead to the cylinder head and the valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Using a new valve cover gasket, install the valve cover onto the cylinder head. Torque the nuts in the following order:
    1. Torque the nuts, 1 through 10, in sequence, to 9-36 in.lbs (1-3 Nm.).
    2.  
    3. Torque the nuts, 1 through 10, in sequence, to 47.7-65.1 in.lbs (5.4-7.4 Nm.).

  1. Using a new gasket, install the intake manifold collector.
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition coils and tighten the ignition coil-to-valve cover bolts.
  4.  
  5. Connect the accelerator cable to the throttle body.
  6.  
  7. Connect the hoses to the throttle body, the EGR valve, the EGR control solenoid valve, the intake manifold collector, the power valve control solenoid valve (if equipped with a manual transaxle) and the power valve actuator (if equipped with a manual transaxle).

  9. Connect the electrical connectors from the throttle position sensor, the exhaust gas temperature sensor, etc.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
