Remove the transaxle assembly and engine assembly together from the vehicle.

  1. Remove exhaust front tube.
  2.  
  3. Remove dust cover from converter housing part.
  4.  
  5. Turn crankshaft clockwise and remove the four tightening nuts for drive plate and torque converter.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four bolts in the illustration.
  8.  
  9. Remove transaxle assembly and engine assembly together from the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove halfshaft.
  12.  


NOTE
Be sure to replace the new differential side oil seal every removal of halfshaft.

  1. Remove transfer case gusset. (AWD models)
  2.  
  3. Remove transfer case assembly.
  4.  


NOTE
Be sure to replace the new differential side oil seal (converter housing side only) whenever the transfer case is removed.

  1. Remove filler pipe.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect harness connector and wire harness.
  4.  
  5. Remove POS sensor, from engine assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove starter motor.
  8.  
  9. Remove CVT fluid cooler valve assembly. (With CVT fluid cooler tube assembly and heater hose).
  10.  
  11. Install slinger to transaxle assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove rear gusset.
  14.  
  15. Remove left engine mounting bracket and left engine mounting insulator.
  16.  
  17. Remove front suspension member from transaxle assembly and engine assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove transaxle assembly bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove transaxle assembly from engine assembly with a hoist. Secure torque converter to prevent it from dropping.

NOTE
After installing a torque converter to a transaxle, be sure to check dimension A to ensure it is within the reference value limit.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal. Note the following:

    Screw and set the locator into the stud bolts for the torque converter locate.
     
    Rotate the torque converter to allow the locator to go down.
     
    Rotate the drive plate so that the hole of the drive plate locator faces down.
     
    Installing transaxle assembly from engine assembly with a hoist.
     
    When installing fluid cooler tube to transaxle assembly, transaxle assembly the part with the tube aligned with the rib.
     
    When installing CVT fluid cooler valve assembly to the engine, torque the bolts to: 28-32 Nm (21-23 ft. lbs.)
     
    Align the positions of tightening nuts for drive plate with those of the torque converter, and temporarily tighten the nuts. Then, tighten the nuts to the specified torque.
     
    Install POS sensor.
     
    After completing installation, check for fluid leakage, fluid level, and the positions of CVT.
     
    When replacing the CVT assembly, erase EEP ROM in TCM.

The engine and transaxle are removed as an assembly from the vehicle.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the engine under cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air guide. Remove the exhaust front tube.
  6.  
  7. Remove dust cover from converter housing part.
  8.  
  9. Turn crankshaft clockwise and remove the four tightening nuts for drive plate and torque converter.
  10.  
  11. Remove the four lower transaxle retaining bolts, 2WD vehicles. Remove the six lower transaxle retaining bolts, AWD vehicles. See illustration for location.

  13. Remove the engine and transaxle from the vehicle, as an assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the halfshaft.
    NOTE
    Be sure to replace the new differential side oil seal every removal of halfshaft.

  17. Remove the transfer case gusset. (AWD vehicles)
  18.  
  19. Remove the transfer case assembly.
    NOTE
    Be sure to replace the new differential side oil seal (converter housing side only) whenever the transfer case is removed.

  20.  
  21. Remove the filler pipe. Discard the O-ring.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the harness connector and wire harness.
  24.  
  25. Remove the POS sensor, from engine assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the starter.
  28.  
  29. Remove CVT fluid cooler valve assembly. (With CVT fluid cooler tube assembly and heater hose).
  30.  
  31. Install the slinger to transaxle assembly.
  32.  
  33. Remove the rear gusset.
  34.  
  35. Remove the left engine mounting bracket and the left engine mounting insulator.
  36.  
  37. Remove the front suspension member from the engine/transaxle assembly.
  38.  
  39. Remove the transaxle assembly bolts.
  40.  
  41. Separate the transaxle from the engine with a hoist. Secure torque converter to prevent it from dropping.
    NOTE
    After installing a torque converter to a transaxle, be sure to check dimension A to ensure it is within the reference value limit. Specification should be 0.55 inch or more.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal. Note the following:

    When replacing the CVT assembly, erase EEP ROM in TCM
