Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

Fuel tube and fuel injector assembly

    Intake manifold

    Exhaust manifold

    Water inlet and thermostat assembly

    Water outlet and water piping

    Camshaft

Cylinder head bolts in reverse of the tightening sequence

  4.
  5. Inspect the bolts. Cylinder head bolts are tightened by plastic zone tightening method. Whenever the size difference between d1 and d2 exceeds the limit, replace them with new one. If reduction of outer diameter appears in a position other than d2, use it as d2 point.

To install:

  1. Install cylinder head gasket.
  2.
  3. Turn the crankshaft until No. 1 piston is set at TDC on the compression stroke. The crankshaft key should line up with the right bank cylinder center line as shown.
  4.
  5. Install cylinder head. Tighten the head bolts in the order shown in illustration.
    1. Step 1: Tighten all bolts to 98.1 Nm (72 ft. lbs.).
    2.
    3. Step 2: Completely loosen to 0 in the reverse order.
    4.
    5. Step 3: Tighten all bolts to 34.3-44.1 Nm (26-32 ft. lbs.).
    6.
    7. Step 4: Turn all bolts 90 degrees clockwise.
    8.
    9. Step 5: Turn all bolts an additional 90 degrees clockwise. 4. After installing cylinder head, measure distance between front end faces of cylinder block and cylinder head (left and right banks). If measurement is outside the specified range, reinstall cylinder head. 5. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
