Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly

Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the strut assembly.
  4.  
  5. Compress the coil spring and remove the piston rod nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Face the side of the coil spring downward. Align the lower end of the spring to the spring rubber seat.



    Upper strut mount
     
    Strut mount bracket
     
    Upper strut bearing
     
    Spring upper seat
     
    Coil spring

  9. Be sure to replace all non reusable components with new ones.
  10.  
  11. Install the spring compressor tool. Install or connect the following:

    Coil spring
     
    Spring upper seat
     
    Upper strut bearing
     
    Strut mount bracket
     
    Upper strut mount. Tighten the piston rod nut to 43-58 ft. lbs. (59-78 Nm).
     

  12.  
  13. Remove the spring compressor and install the strut assembly to the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Check the wheel alignment and adjust, as necessary.
  16.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove cowl top grille.
  6.  
  7. Remove brake caliper. Hang it in a place where it will not interfere with work.
  8.  
  9. Remove lock plate from brake hose from strut assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove harness from wheel sensor from strut assembly. Do not pull on wheel sensor harness.
  12.  
  13. Remove mounting nut between strut assembly and connecting rod.
  14.  
  15. Remove mounting bolt and nut between strut assembly and steering knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Remove mounting nuts on mounting insulator bracket, then remove strut assembly from vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Installation is the reverse of removal. Perform final tightening of strut assembly lower side (rubber bushing) under unladen conditions with tires on level ground. Check wheel alignment.
  20.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove cowl top grille.
  6.  
  7. Remove brake caliper. Hang it in a place where it will not interfere with work.
  8.  
  9. Remove lock plate from brake hose from strut assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove harness from wheel sensor from strut assembly. Do not pull on wheel sensor harness.
  12.  
  13. Remove mounting nut between strut assembly and connecting rod.
  14.  
  15. Remove mounting bolt and nut between strut assembly and steering knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Remove mounting nuts on mounting insulator bracket, then remove strut assembly from vehicle.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to replace all non reusable components with new ones.
  4.  
  5. Perform final tightening of the strut assembly lower side (rubber bushing) under unladen conditions with tires on level ground.
  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the front end alignment, as necessary.
