Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning

Adjustment

NOTE
Accelerator pedal released position learning is an operation to learn the fully released position of the accelerator pedal by monitoring the accelerator pedal position sensor output signal. It must be performed each time the harness connector of the accelerator pedal position sensor or the ECM is disconnected.

  1. Make sure that the accelerator pedal is in the fully released position.
  2.
  3. Turn the ignition switch ON. Wait at least 2 seconds.
  4.
  5. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Wait at least 10 seconds.
  6.
  7. Turn the ignition switch ON. Wait at least 2 seconds.
  8.
  9. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Wait at least 10 seconds.
  10.

Idle Air Volume Learning

NOTE
Idle air volume learning is an operation to learn the idle air volume that keeps the engine within a specific range. It must be performed each time the electronic throttle control actuator or ECM is replaced, or if the idle speed and ignition timing is out of specification.

Adjustment
With Consult-II
  1. Perform accelerator pedal released position learning procedure.
  2.
  3. Perform throttle valve closed position learning procedure.
  4.
  5. Perform pre-adjustment procedure.
  6.
  7. Start and run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached.
  8.
  9. Select -idle air vol learn- in work support mode.
  10.
  11. Touch -start- and wait 20 seconds.
  12.
  13. Be sure that -CMPLT- is displayed on the screen. If not displayed, idle air volume learning will not be carried out successfully.
  14.
  15. Rev the engine two or three times and make sure that the idle speed and ignition timing are within specification.
  16.

Without Consult-II

NOTE
It is better to count the time accurately, using a clock. It is impossible to switch the diagnostic mode when the accelerator pedal position sensor circuit has a malfunction.

  1. Perform accelerator pedal released position learning procedure.
  2.
  3. Perform throttle valve closed position learning procedure.
  4.
  5. Perform pre-adjustment procedure.
  6.
  7. Start and run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached.
  8.
  9. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Wait at least 10 seconds.
  10.
  11. Confirm that the accelerator pedal is fully released. Turn the ignition switch ON and wait 3 seconds.
  12.
  13. Fully depress the accelerator, fully release the accelerator pedal.
    NOTE
Repeat the above step 5 times, within 5 seconds.

  14.
  15. Wait 7 seconds. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it depressed for about 20 seconds, until the MIL stops blinking and turned ON.
  16.
  17. Fully depress the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after the MIL turned ON.
  18.
  19. Start the engine and let it idle.
  20.
  21. Wait 20 seconds.
  22.
  23. Rev the engine two or three times and make sure that the idle speed and ignition timing are within specification.
  24.

Pre-Adjustment

NOTE
Before performing the idle air volume learning procedure, be sure the following conditions are satisfied. Learning will be cancelled if any of the following conditions are missed for even a moment.

  1. Be sure battery voltage is at least 12.9 volts at idle.
  2.
  3. Be sure engine coolant temperature is at least 158-212 degrees.
  4.
  5. Be sure PNP switch in ON.
  6.
  7. Be sure electric load switch is OFF (air conditioning, headlights, rear defogger etc.).
    NOTE
On vehicles equipped with daytime running lights, if the parking brake is applied before the engine is started the headlights will not turn on.

  8.
  9. Be sure the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position.
  10.
  11. Be sure the vehicle is stopped.
  12.
  13. Be sure the transmission is warmed up.
    NOTE
For vehicles with CONSULT-II, drive the vehicle until the -fluid temp SE- in the data monitor mode of the CVT system indicates less than 0.0 volt. For vehicles without CONSULT-II, drive the vehicle for 10 minutes.

  14.

Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning

Adjustment

NOTE
Throttle valve closed position learning is an operation to learn the fully closed position of the throttle valve by monitoring the throttle valve position sensor output signal. It must be performed each time the harness connector of the electrical throttle valve control actuator or ECM is disconnected.

  1. Make sure that the accelerator pedal is in the fully released position.
  2.
  3. Turn the ignition switch ON.
  4.
  5. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Wait at least 10 seconds.
  6.
  7. Make sure that the throttle valve moves during the 10 seconds, by confirming the operating sound.
  8.
