Removal & Installation

NOTE
Be sure to disarm the SRS system, prior to working on the vehicle. Turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least three minutes before starting any work.

2-Wheel Drive



  1. Set wheels in the straight ahead position.
  2.  
  3. Remove lock nut and bolt, then separate lower joint from upper joint.
  4.  
  5. Remove wheels.
  6.  
  7. Confirm that the slit on lower joint fits with the projection on rear cover cap, also the matchmark on steering gear assembly fits with the projection on rear cover cap.
  8.  
  9. Remove cotter pin at steering knuckle, then loosen mounting nut.
  10.  
  11. Use a ball joint remover to remove steering outer socket from steering knuckle. Be careful not to damage ball joint boot.
  12.  


NOTE
To prevent damage to threads and to prevent ball joint remover from coming off, temporarily tighten mounting nut.

  1. Remove oil pipes (high pressure side and low pressure side) from steering gear assembly, then drain fluid from pipes.
  2.  
  3. Remove mounting bolt (lower side) from lower joint.
  4.  
  5. Remove mounting bolts and nut from steering gear assembly, and then remove steering gear assembly, rack mounting bracket, rack mounting insulator and sleeve from vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  8.  


NOTE
When steering wheel is set in the straight ahead direction, confirm slit of lower joint fits with the projection on rear cover cap, also the matchmarks on steering gear assembly fit with the projection on rear cover cap.

  1. After installation, bleed air from piping.
  2.  
  3. Check if steering wheel turns smoothly when it is turned several times fully to the end of the left and right.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disarm the SRS system. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Set wheels in the straight ahead position.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  8.  
  9. Remove locknut and bolt, then separate lower joint from upper joint.
  10.  
  11. Remove the tires and wheels.
  12.  
  13. Confirm that the slit on lower joint fits with the projection on rear cover cap, also the matchmark on steering gear assembly fits with the projection on rear cover cap.
  14.  
  15. Remove cotter pin at steering knuckle, and then loosen mounting nut.
  16.  
  17. Use a ball joint remover to remove steering outer socket from steering knuckle. Be careful not to damage ball joint boot.
    NOTE
    To prevent damage to threads and to prevent ball joint remover from coming off, temporarily tighten mounting nut.

  18.  
  19. Remove oil pipes (high pressure side and low pressure side) from steering gear assembly, then drain fluid from pipes.
  20.  
  21. Remove mounting bolt (lower side) from lower joint.
  22.  
  23. Remove mounting bolts and nut from steering gear assembly, and then remove steering gear assembly, rack mounting bracket, rack mounting insulator and sleeve from vehicle.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2.  
  3. Be sure to replace all non reusable components with new ones.
    NOTE
    When steering wheel is set in the straight ahead direction, confirm slit of lower joint fits with the projection on rear cover cap, also the matchmarks on steering gear assembly fit with the projection on rear cover cap.

  5. After installation, bleed air from piping.
  6.

  1. Set wheels in the straight-ahead position.

  3. Remove lock nut and bolt, then separate lower joint from upper joint.
  4.  
  5. Remove tires from vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove undercover from vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Confirm slit of lower joint fits with the projection on rear cover cap, furthermore marking position on steering gear assembly nearly fits with the projection on rear cover cap.
  10.  
  11. Remove oil pipes (high pressure side and low pressure side) from steering gear assembly, then drain fluid from pipes.
  12.  
  13. Remove cotter pin at steering knuckle, then loosen mounting nut.
  14.  
  15. Use a ball joint remover to remove steering outer socket from steering knuckle. Be careful not to damage ball joint boot.
  16.  


NOTE
To prevent damage to threads and to prevent ball joint remover from coming off, and temporarily tighten mounting nut.

  1. Remove mounting bolt (lower side) from lower joint.
  2.  
  3. Remove front exhaust tube.
  4.  
  5. Remove rear propeller shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove mounting nuts on lower position from stabilizer connecting rod.
  8.  
  9. Remove mounting bolts from stabilizer clamp and hang stabilizer on vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove steering hydraulic piping bracket from front suspension member.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect electrical rear engine mounting actuator harness connector.
  14.  
  15. Set jack under engine and front suspension member.
  16.  
  17. Remove mounting bolts from rear engine mounting insulator.
  18.  
  19. Loosen mounting nuts of front suspension member (front side).
  20.  
  21. Remove mounting bolts from member stay (body side), then loosen mounting nuts of member stay (front suspension member side).
  22.  
  23. Move jack down slowly (front suspension member side) to remove rear engine mounting insulator from engine and front suspension member.
  24.  
  25. Remove mounting bolts and nut from steering gear assembly, and then remove steering gear assembly, rack mounting bracket, rack mounting insulator and sleeve from vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  28.

  47. Remove mounting bolts and nut from steering gear assembly, and then remove steering gear assembly, rack mounting bracket, rack mounting insulator and sleeve from vehicle.
  48.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
