  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Battery
     
    Air intake duct
     
    Battery bracket
     
    Fluid charging pipe
     
    S connector
     
    B terminal nut
     
    Starter motor mounting bolts
     
    Starter motor to the direction of upper side the vehicle
     

  4.  
  5. Install in the reverse order of removal. Observe the following toques:

    B terminal nut: 9.8-11.8 Nm (87-104 inch lbs.)
     
    Starter motor mounting bolt: 47-63 Nm (35-46 ft. lbs.)
     
    Battery bracket mounting bolt: 14-20 Nm (10-15 ft. lbs.)

    Battery
     
    Air intake duct
     
    Battery bracket
     
    Transaxle dipstick tube on AWD vehicles. Be sure to drain the transaxle fluid.
     
    S connector
     
    B terminal nut
     
    Starter motor mounting bolts
     
    Starter motor to the direction of upper side the vehicle

To install:

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal. Observe the following toques:

    B terminal nut: 9.8-11.8 Nm (87-104 inch lbs.)
     
    Starter motor mounting bolt: 47-63 Nm (35-46 ft. lbs.)
     
    Battery bracket mounting bolt: 14-20 Nm (10-15 ft. lbs.)

Testing & Troubleshooting



The starter should crank the engine smoothly and steadily. If the starter engages, but cranks the engine erratically, remove it, and inspect the starter drive gear and torque converter ring gear for damage. Check the drive gear overrunning clutch for binding or slipping when the armature is rotated with the drive gear held. If damaged, replace the gears.
