Front Crankshaft Seal

Removal & Installation



3.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Radiator hoses
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Front cover
     
    Timing belt. Refer to the Timing Belt unit repair section.
     
    Crankshaft timing sprocket
     
    Front crankshaft seal
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Front crankshaft seal flush with the oil pump housing
     
    Crankshaft timing sprocket
     
    Timing belt
     
    Front cover. Tighten the bolts to 26-43 inch lbs. (3-5 Nm).
     
    Crankshaft pulley. Tighten the bolt to 141-156 ft. lbs. (191-211 Nm).
     
    Radiator hoses
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Negative battery cable

  3. Fill the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

3.5L Engine

For the 3.5L engine, see the Timing Chain procedure.

4.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Upper and lower radiator shrouds
     
    Engine cooling fan assembly
     
    Starter motor

  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley as follows:
    1. Loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt 0.39 inches (10 mm) from its original seating position.
    2.  
    3. Pull the crankshaft pulley with both hands to remove it.
      NOTE
      Do not remove the crankshaft pulley bolt. Keep the bolt in place to prevent the pulley from falling.

  9. Remove the front oil seal using a suitable pry tool.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Apply new engine oil to both the oil seal lip and dust seal lip of the new front seal.
  2.  
  3. Install the front oil seal with the seal lip orientated as shown.

  5. Press-fit the seal with a suitable tool until it is flush with the mounting surface.
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
    NOTE
    When press-fitting the crankshaft pulley with a plastic hammer, tap on the center portion only and take care not to damage the oil seal.

  9. Install or connect the following:

    Starter motor
     
    Engine cooling fan assembly
     
    Radiator shrouds
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Refill the engine oil to the correct level.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
