Removal & Installation



3.3L Engine
2-Wheel Drive Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Stabilizer bar
     
    Front crossmember
     
    Starter motor
     
    Transmission mount
     
    Left and right motor mounts
     
    Power steering gear
     

  6.  
  7. Raise and support the engine for clearance.
  8.  
  9. Remove the or disconnect the following:

    Oil pan bolts in the sequence shown

To install:

  1. Apply a continuous bead of sealant 0.138-0.177 in. (3.5-4.5mm) to the oil pan mating surface.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Wait 30 minutes after installation of the oil pan to allow the sealant to cure before adding oil.



    Oil pan. Tighten the bolts in reverse of the removal sequence to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
     
    Power steering gear
     
    Left and right motor mounts
     
    Transmission mount
     
    Starter motor
     
    Front crossmember
     
    Stabilizer bar
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the crankcase to the correct level.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

4-Wheel Drive Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Stabilizer bar brackets
     
    Front driveshaft
     
    Axle halfshafts
     
    Front suspension crossmember
     
    Front differential and mounting bracket
     
    Starter motor
     
    Transmission mount
     
    Left and right motor mounts
     
    Power steering gear
     
    Relay rod
     

  6.  
  7. Raise and support the engine for clearance.
  8.  
  9. Remove the or disconnect the following:

    Oil pan bolts in the sequence
     
    Oil pan
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Apply a continuous bead of sealant 0.138-0.177 in. (3.5-4.5mm) to the oil pan mating surface.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Wait 30 minutes after installation of the oil pan to allow the sealant to cure before adding oil.



    Oil pan. Tighten the bolts in reverse of the removal sequence to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
     
    Relay rod
     
    Power steering gear
     
    Left and right motor mounts
     
    Transmission mount
     
    Starter motor
     
    Front differential and mounting bracket
     
    Front suspension crossmember
     
    Axle halfshafts
     
    Front driveshaft
     
    Stabilizer bar brackets
     
    Engine under cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the crankcase to the correct level.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

3.5L Engines
  1. Remove the front RH and LH wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove the battery.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil level gauge.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine undercover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the suspension member stay.
  10.  
  11. Drain engine coolant from radiator drain plug.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect A/T oil cooler hoses. (A/T)
  14.  
  15. Drain engine oil.
  16.  
  17. Remove the crankshaft position sensors (REF and POS).
  18.  
  19. Remove the drive belts and idler pulley with bracket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the power steering oil pump, then put it aside holding with a suitable wire.
  22.  
  23. Remove the alternator.
  24.  
  25. Install engine slingers.
  26.  
  27. Remove the front propeller shaft. (4WD)
  28.  
  29. Remove the exhaust front tube heat insulators, then remove rear heat oxygen sensors.
  30.  
  31. Remove the exhaust front tube from both sides.
  32.  
  33. Remove the front final drive. (4WD)
  34.  
  35. Remove the starter motor.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect oil pressure switch harness connector.
  38.  
  39. Loosen and disconnect the bolts fixing the steering column assembly lower joint and the power steering gear.
  40.  
  41. Set a suitable transmission jack under the front suspension member and hoist engine with engine slingers.
  42.  
  43. Remove the front engine mounting nuts from both sides.
  44.  
  45. Remove the front suspension member bolts.
  46.  
  47. Lower the transmission jack carefully to secure clearance between the oil pan and suspension member.
  48.  
  49. Remove the A/T oil cooler tube. (A/T)
  50.  
  51. Remove the water hose and tube. (A/T)
  52.  
  53. Remove the four engine-to-transmission bolts.
  54.  
  55. Remove the aluminum oil pan bolts in numerical order.
  56.  
  57. Remove the aluminum oil pan.
    1. Insert tool between aluminum oil pan and cylinder block.
      NOTE
      Be careful not to damage aluminum mating surface. I Do not insert screwdriver, or oil pan flange will be deformed.

    3. Slide tool by tapping its side with a hammer.
    4.

  59. Remove the O-rings from cylinder block and oil pump body.
  60.  
  61. Remove the front cover gasket and rear oil seal retainer gasket.
  62.

  1. Before installing oil pan, remove old liquid gasket from mating surface using a scraper. Also remove old liquid gasket from mating surface of cylinder block. Remove old liquid gasket from the bolt hole and thread.
  2.  
  3. Apply sealant to front cover gasket and rear oil seal retainer gasket.
  4.  
  5. Install front cover gasket and rear oil seal retainer gasket.
  6.  
  7. Apply a continuous bead of liquid gasket to mating surface of aluminum oil pan. Use RTV silicone sealant or equivalent.
  8.  
  9. Apply liquid gasket to inner sealing surface as shown in figure. Be sure liquid gasket is 4.0 to 5.0 mm (0.157 to 0.197 in) or 4.5 to 5.5 mm (0.177 to 0.217 in) wide. Attaching should be done within 5 minutes after coating.
  10.  
  11. Install O-rings, cylinder block and oil pump body.
  12.  
  13. Install aluminum oil pan. Tighten bolts in numerical order. Wait at least 30 minutes before refilling engine oil.
  14.  
  15. Install the four engine-to-transmission bolts.
  16.  
  17. The remainder of installation is the reverse order of removal.
  18.  

4.0L Engine
Lower Oil Pan
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower oil pan bolts in the reverse order of the installation sequence.
  6.  
  7. Use a seal cutter if necessary to remove the oil pan.
    WARNING
    Do not use a screwdriver to pry the pan off, this may damage the mating surfaces.

  8.  

To install:

  1. Use a scraper to completely remove any old sealant.
  2.  
  3. Apply a continuous bead of RTV to the lower oil pan as shown.

  5. Install the lower oil pan and tighten the bolts in sequence to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    NOTE
    Wait at least 30 minutes for RTV to dry before filling with oil.

  7. Refill the engine oil to the correct level.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  10.  

Upper Oil Pan
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Remove the or disconnect the following:

    Front final drive, if equipped with 4WD
     
    Steering gear mounting nuts and shaft bolt and position out of the way
     
    Starter motor
     
    Transmission cooler hoses
     
    Oil filter
     
    Oil cooler
     
    Lower oil pan
     
    Oil strainer
     
    Transmission mounting bolts that bolt into the upper oil pan
     
    Rear cover plate
     

  8.  
  9. Loosen the upper oil pan bolts in the reverse order of the installation sequence.
  10.  
  11. Use a seal cutter if necessary to remove the oil pan.
    WARNING
    Do not use a screwdriver to pry the pan off, this may damage the mating surfaces.

To install:

  1. Use a scraper to completely remove any old sealant.
  2.  
  3. Apply a continuous bead of RTV to the upper oil pan as shown.

  5. Install the upper oil pan bolts and tighten is sequence to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

  7. Tighten any transmission mounting bolts removed to 55 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Wait at least 30 minutes for RTV to dry before filling with oil.



    Oil strainer
     
    Lower oil pan
     
    Oil cooler
     
    Oil filter
     
    Transmission cooler hoses
     
    Starter motor
     
    Steering gear
     
    Front final drive, if equipped with 4WD
     

  10.  
  11. Refill the engine oil to the correct level.
  12.  
  13. Fill the cooling system to the correct level.
  14.  
  15. Start then engine and check for leaks.
