Removal & Installation



3.3L & 3.5L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine cover, if necessary
     
    Upper intake manifold
     
    Valve covers
     

  4.  

To install:



Valve covers
 
Upper intake manifold
 
Engine cover, if removed
 
Negative battery cable
 

  1. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  2.  

4.0L Engines
Left Bank
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Separate the engine harness, removing their brackets from rocker covers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the harness bracket from cylinder head, if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Remove ignition coil. Refer to the Engine Electrical Section.
  10.  
  11. Remove PCV hoses from rocker covers.
  12.  
  13. Remove oil filler cap from rocker cover, if necessary.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the rocker cover bolts in the reverse order of the bolt tightening sequence, as shown in the accompanying illustration.
  16.  
  17. Remove rocker cover gaskets from rocker covers.
  18.  
  19. Use scraper to remove all traces of liquid gasket from cylinder head and camshaft bracket (No. 1).
    WARNING
    Do not scratch or damage the mating surface when cleaning off old liquid gasket.

To install:


NOTE
The figure shows an example of left bank side [zoomed in shows camshaft bracket (No. 1)].

  1. Apply liquid gasket using Tool to joint part among rocker cover, cylinder head and camshaft bracket (No. 1) as follows: Use Genuine RTV Silicone Sealant or equivalent.
    1. Refer to the figure -a- to apply liquid gasket to joint part of camshaft bracket (No. 1) and cylinder head.
    2.  
    3. Refer to the figure -b- to apply liquid gasket to the figure -a- squarely.

  3. Install new rocker cover gasket to rocker cover.
  4.  
  5. Install rocker cover. Make sure the gasket is properly seated in the groove of rocker cover.
  6.  
  7. Tighten bolts in two steps separately in numerical order as shown:
    1. Step 1: 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Step 2: 74 inch lbs. (8.3 Nm)

  9. Install oil filer cap to rocker cover (left bank), if removed.
  10.  
  11. Install PCV hose. Insert PCV hose by 25 to 30 mm (0.98 to 1.18 in) from connector end.
  12.  
  13. When installing, be careful not to twist or come in contact with other parts.
  14.  
  15. Installation of the remaining components is in the reverse order of removal.
  16.  

Right Bank
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Make sure the engine is cold, then remove the intake manifold collector.
  4.  
  5. Separate engine harness removing their brackets from rocker covers.
  6.  
  7. Remove harness bracket from cylinder head (right bank).
  8.  
  9. Remove ignition coil. Refer to the Engine Electrical Section.
  10.  
  11. Remove PCV hoses from rocker cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove PCV valve and O-ring from rocker cover (right bank), if necessary.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the rocker cover bolts in the reverse order of the bolt tightening sequence, as shown in the accompanying illustration.
  16.  
  17. Remove rocker cover gaskets from rocker covers.
  18.  
  19. Use scraper to remove all traces of liquid gasket from cylinder head and camshaft bracket (No. 1).
    WARNING
    Do not scratch or damage the mating surface when cleaning off old liquid gasket.

To install:


NOTE

  3. Install new rocker cover gasket to rocker cover.

  5. Install rocker cover. Make sure the gasket is properly seated in the groove of rocker cover.

  9. Install new O-ring and PCV valve to rocker cover (right bank), if removed.
  10.  
  11. Install PCV hose. Insert PCV hose by 25 to 30 mm (0.98 to 1.18 in) from connector end. When installing, be careful not to twist or come in contact with other parts.

  13. Installation of the remaining components is the reverse of the removal procedure.
