Overhaul



Inner Joint
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the axle halfshaft from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the plug seal by tapping around the joint housing flange with a brass hammer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the or disconnect the following:

    CV-joint boot clamps
     
    Snapring
     
    Spider assembly
     
    CV-joint housing
     
    CV-joint boot
     

  8.  

To install:


NOTE
Use new snaprings and plug seals for assembly.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    CV-joint boot
     
    CV-joint housing
     
    Spider assembly
     
    Snapring. Pack the joint with grease.
     
    CV-joint boot clamps
     
    Plug seal
     

  2.  
  3. Install the axle halfshaft to the vehicle.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the halfshaft and mount in a vise.
  4.  
  5. Remove the boot bands and slide the boot back.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the joint housing and halfshaft before separating.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stopper ring with a flat-bladed screwdriver and pull off the housing.

  11. Remove the snap ring, then inner race assembly from the halfshaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the boot from the shaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the circlip and dust cover from the housing.

To install:

  1. Wrap the serrated part of the shaft with tape and install the boot band and boot to the shaft.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tape and install the inner race assembly and secure with a new snap ring.

  5. Insert 4.23-4.94 oz. of grease into the housing in the locations shown and install it into the shaft.

  7. Install a new stopper ring onto the housing.
  8.  
  9. Install the boot securely into the grooves on the halfshaft
  10.  
  11. Check that the boot installation length is 6.45-6.47 inches (163.9-164.3 mm).

  13. Secure the boot with new boot bands.
  14.  
  15. Install a new circlip and dust cover.
  16.  

Outer Joint
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the axle halfshaft from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the CV-joint boot clamps and push the boot away from the joint.
  6.  
  7. Remove the CV-joint from the axle shaft by tapping it with a brass hammer.
  8.  

To install:


NOTE
Use new circlips and boot clamps for assembly.

  1. Install the CV-joint to the axle shaft by tapping it with a brass hammer.
  2.  
  3. Pack the joint with grease.
  4.  
  5. Install the boot clamps.
  6.  
  7. Install the axle halfshaft to the vehicle.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the halfshaft and mount in a vise.
  4.  
  5. Remove the boot bands and slide the boot back.
  6.  
  7. Screw a slide hammer or suitable equivalent onto the threaded part of the joint sub-assembly.
  8.  
  9. Pull the joint sub-assembly off of the shaft.

  11. Remove the boot and circlip from the halfshaft.

To install:

  1. Install grease into the joint sub-assembly serration hole until grease begins to ooze from the ball groove and serration hole.
  2.  
  3. Wrap the serrated end of the halfshaft with tape and install a new boot onto the shaft.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tape and install a new circlip onto the shaft.
  6.  
  7. Insert 4.01-4.76 oz of grease into the joint sub-assembly and large end of the boot.
  8.  
  9. Install the boot securely into the shaft grooves. Ensure the boot installation length is 5.32 inches (135.1 mm).
  10.  
  11. Secure both ends of the boot with new bands. Ensure boot band crimp is 0.39-1.57 (1-4 mm).

  13. After installation, rotate the boot to ensure proper positioning.
