Steering Knuckle

Removal & Installation



  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  4.  
  5. Unbolt the caliper and suspend it from the body with a piece of wire. Do NOT disconnect the brake line.
    WARNING
    Do not depress the brake pedal while brake caliper is removed!

  7. Put matchmarks on the disc rotor and wheel hub and bearing assembly, then remove the brake rotor.

  9. Disconnect the wheel sensor and remove the bracket from steering knuckle. Do not pull on the wheel sensor harness.
  10.  
  11. On 4WD models, remove the cotter pin, then remove the lock nut from drive shaft. Discard the cotter pin.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering outer socket (tie rod) cotter pin at steering knuckle, then loosen the mounting nut. Discard the cotter pin.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect steering outer socket from steering knuckle using a suitable puller tool. Be careful not to damage ball joint boot.
    WARNING
    To prevent damage to threads and to prevent tool from coming off suddenly, temporarily tighten nut.

  17. Remove wheel hub and bearing assembly bolts, then remove the splash guard and wheel hub and bearing assembly from steering knuckle.
    WARNING
    Do not pull on wheel sensor harness.

  19. Remove the cotter pin and nut from upper link ball joint. Separate upper link ball joint from steering knuckle using a suitable puller. Discard the cotter pin.

  21. Remove the pinch bolt from the steering knuckle, then separate lower link ball joint from steering knuckle.

  23. Remove the steering knuckle from vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Check for deformity, cracks and damage on each part, replace if necessary.
    WARNING
    Always use new cotter pins during installation!

  27. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, refer to the accompanying illustration and the following for tightening specifications:
    1. Drive shaft nut (4WD models: 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Steering outer socket (tie rod) nut: 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm)
