Wheel Bearings

Adjustment



The wheel hub and bearing assembly is sealed unit. If there is any axial play or irregular conditions, the hub assembly must be replaced.

2-Wheel Drive

NOTE
Use a new split pin for assembly.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the or disconnect the following:

    Dust cap
     
    Split pin
     
    Spindle nut cap
     

  4.  
  5. Tighten the spindle nut to 25-29 ft. lbs. (34-39 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Spin the hub several times to fully seat the bearings.
  8.  
  9. Retighten the spindle nut to 25-29 ft. lbs. (34-39 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Loosen the spindle nut 45-60 degrees and install the spindle nut cap and split pin.
  12.  
  13. Install the dust cap.
  14.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the or disconnect the following:

    Locking hub or driveplate
     
    Snapring
     
    Spindle washer
     
    Thrust washer
     
    Lockwasher
     

  4.  
  5. Tighten the wheel bearing locknut to 58-72 ft. lbs. (78-98 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Loosen the locknut fully.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the wheel bearing locknut to 4-13 inch lbs. (0.5-1.5 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Spin the hub several times to fully seat the bearings.
  12.  
  13. Retighten the wheel bearing locknut to 4-13 inch lbs. (0.5-1.5 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    Lockwasher. Tighten the retaining screw to 10-16 inch lbs. (1-2 Nm).
     
    Thrust washer
     
    Spindle washer
     
    Snapring
     
    Locking hub or driveplate

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper assembly and hang securely with wire.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the brake rotor and hub assembly and remove the rotor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the or disconnect the following:

    Hub spindle nut
     
    Halfshaft, if equipped with 4-Wheel Drive
     
    Wheel speed sensor
     
    Wheel hub assembly
     

  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Note the following during installation:
    1. Use new bolts for the wheel hub assembly.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the wheel hub assembly bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).

  3. Remove the or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper and support
     
    Dust cap
     
    Split pin
     
    Spindle nut cap
     
    Spindle nut
     
    Bearing washer
     
    Outer bearing
     
    Hub and brake rotor assembly
     
    Inner grease seal
     
    Inner wheel bearing

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Inner wheel bearing
     
    Inner grease seal
     
    Hub and brake rotor assembly
     
    Outer bearing
     
    Bearing washer
     
    Spindle nut. Adjust the wheel bearings.
     
    Spindle nut cap
     
    Split pin
     
    Dust cap
     
    Brake caliper and support
     
    Front wheel

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Inner wheel bearing
     
    Inner grease seal
     
    Hub and brake rotor assembly
     
    Outer bearing
     
    Wheel bearing locknut. Adjust the wheel bearings.
     
    Lockwasher
     
    Thrust washer
     
    Spindle washer
     
    Snapring
     
    Locking hub or driveplate
     
    Brake caliper and support
     
    Front wheel
