Removal & Installation



2005 Models
  1. Center the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  2.  
  3. Make sure the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Make sure the ignition is OFF , then disconnect the negative battery cable, then the positive battery cable and wait at least 10 minutes before proceeding.
    CAUTION
    When removing the air bag module, always work from the side of the module, never directly in front of it.

  7. Remove the driver air bag module:
    WARNING
    Do not attempt to repair or replace damaged direct-connect SRS component connectors. If a driver air bag direct-connect harness connector is damaged, the spiral cable must be replaced.


    CAUTION
    When servicing the SRS, do not work from directly in front of air bag module.

    1. Find the retaining clip access hole and insert suitable 4-6mm blunt tool.
      NOTE
      Never use a sharp edged object, such as a screwdriver to release driver air bag module from steering wheel, or you may damage the SRS components.

    3. Press upward (toward center of steering wheel) on the retaining clip until driver air bag module is released from steering wheel.

    5. Lift the driver air bag module from the steering wheel.
    6.  
    7. Detach the driver air bag module and horn connectors, then remove the driver air bag module.
      CAUTION
      When servicing the SRS, do not work from directly in front of air bag module.


      CAUTION
      When handling the air bag module, note the following:



      Always place air bag module with pad side facing upward.
       
      Do not attempt to disassemble air bag module.
       
      Do not insert any foreign objects (screwdriver, etc.) into air bag module or connectors.
       
      Do not expose the air bag module to temperatures exceeding 90°C (194°F).

  9. Disconnect the steering wheel switches.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering wheel center nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering wheel, using Tools KV481J0010 (J-1859A) and KV48J0020 (J-42578) or equivalent tools.
    NOTE
    Place a piece of tape across the spiral cable so it will not be rotated out of position.

  15. Inspect the steering wheel near the puller holes for damage. If damage is found, replace the steering wheel.

  17. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  18.  
  19. Detach the wiper and washer switch connector. Then while pressing the tabs, pull the wiper and washer switch away from the spiral cable to remove.

  21. Disconnect the lighting and turn signal switch connector. Then while pressing tabs, pull lighting and turn signal switch toward the driver door to remove.

  23. Remove the screws. Then while pressing the tab, pull the spiral cable away from steering column assembly.
    WARNING
    Do not disassemble spiral cable. Do not apply lubricant to the spiral cable.

  25. Disconnect the spiral cable connectors.

  27. Remove the lower left side instrument panel.
  28.  
  29. Remove the steering column cover and ignition key finisher.
  30.  
  31. Remove the lower knee protector.
  32.  
  33. Remove the lock nut and bolt from the upper joint, then separate the upper joint from the upper shaft.
    WARNING
    Do not reuse the lock nut.

  35. Remove the three nuts and bolt from the steering column assembly, then remove the steering column assembly from the steering member.

  37. Remove the hole cover seal and clamp.
  38.  
  39. Remove the hole cover nuts, then remove the hole cover from the dash panel.
  40.  
  41. Remove the bolt from the lower joint of the lower joint shaft, then remove the lower joint shaft from the vehicle.
    WARNING
    Do not damage the lower joint.

  43. Remove the bolt from the upper joint, then remove the upper joint from the steering column assembly.

  45. Remove the ignition switch tamper resistant self-shear screws, using a drill.
  46.  
  47. Remove the ignition switch from the steering column.

To install:

  1. Assembly of the steering column is the reverse order of disassembly. Install new tamper resistant self-shear screws.

  3. Install the steering column in the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following:
    1. With the wheels in the straight ahead position, align the slit of the lower joint with the projection on the dust cover. Insert the joint until surface "A" contacts surface "B".

    3. After installation, inspect the steering column for proper operation.

  5. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following:
    1. Align the spiral cable correctly when installing the steering wheel. Make sure that the spiral cable is in the neutral position. The neutral position is detected by turning left 2.6 revolutions from the right end position and ending with the locating pin at the top.
      WARNING
      The spiral cable may snap during steering operation if the cable is installed in an improper position or if the steering wheel is turned beyond the limited number of turns with the steering linkage disconnected. (The spiral cable can be turned up to 2.6 turns from the neutral position to both the right and left.)
