BRAKE BAND

L3N71B Only

See Figure 1

  1. Remove the fluid pan.
  2.
  3. Loosen the locknut on the piston stem. Tighten the piston stem to 9-11 ft. lbs. (12-15 Nm).
  4.
  5. Loosen the piston stem exactly two (2) turns. Hold the stem and tighten the locknut to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm) for 1973-79 vehicles or to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm) for 1980-86 vehicles. If the stem turns when the locknut is tightened, loosen the locknut and repeat the adjustment.
  6.
  7. Replace the fluid pan and refill the transmission.

SHIFT LINKAGE

1970-79

See Figure 2

Adjustment of the shift linkage is a critical operation. If the adjustment is made sloppily, the result will be partial application of the band or clutches, and will eventually burn up the transmission.

  1. If the control knob is removed prior to installation set dimension A in the illustration to 0.43-0.47 in. (11-12mm).
  2.
  3. Install the control knob, adjusting dimension B to 0.004-0.043 in. (0.1-1.1mm) by turning the pushing rod (2).
  4.
  5. Loosen the adjusting nuts (H). Set both the shift lever (3) and the transmission selector lever (4) into the neutral positions. Set clearance C to 0.040 in. (1mm) by turning the adjusting nuts which connect to the selector rod (6).
  6.

After making the adjustments, check for proper engagement in each gear, and that the mechanism operates without binding. Readjust as necessary.

1980-86 (720-D Series)

See Figure 3

Adjustment is made at the locknuts at the base of the shifter, which control the length of the shift control rod.

  1. Place the shift lever in D .
  2.
  3. Loosen the locknuts and move the shift lever until it is firmly in the D range, the pointer is aligned, and the transmission is in D range.
  4.
  5. Tighten the locknuts.
  6.
  7. Check the adjustment. Start the truck and apply the parking brake. Shift through all the ranges, starting in P . As the lever is moved from P to 1 , you should be able to feel the detents in each range. If proper adjustment is not possible, the grommets are probably worn and should be replaced.

L4N71B AND E4N71B-FLOOR SHIFT MODELS

See Figure 4

Move the gear selector lever slowly through the ranges from P to 1 . You should be able to feel the detents in each range. If the detents can't be felt, or if the indicator point is out of alignment, the linkage needs adjustment.

  1. Position the selector lever in P .
  2.
  3. Loosen the locknuts.
  4.
  5. Tighten the locknut X until it touches the trunnion, pulling the selector lever toward the R side without pushing the button.
  6.
  7. Back off the locknut X1 / 4 - 1 / 2 turn (1986-87) or 1 turn (1988) and tighten the lock nut Y to 6-8 ft. lbs. (8-11 Nm) on 1986-87 models; 8-11 ft. lbs. (11-15 Nm) on 1988 models.
  8.
  9. Move the selector lever from the P range to the 1 range. Make sure the selector lever moves smoothly.

  4.
  5. Tighten the locknut A until it touches the trunnion, pulling the selector lever toward the R side without pushing the button.
  6.
  7. Back off the locknut A 2 turns and tighten the locknut B to 6-8 ft. lbs. (8-11 Nm) on 1986-87 models; 8-11 ft. lbs. (11-15 Nm) on 1988 models.
  8.
  9. Move the selector lever from the P range to the 1 range. Make sure the selector lever moves smoothly.

  4.
  5. Tighten the turnbuckle until it aligns with the inner cable, pulling the selector lever toward the R side without pushing the button.
  6.
  7. Back off the turnbuckle 1 turn and tighten the locknuts to 3.3-4.3 ft. lbs. (4.4-5.9 Nm).
  8.
  9. Move the selector lever from the P range to the 1 range. Make sure the selector lever moves smoothly.

KICKDOWN SWITCH AND DOWNSHIFT SOLENOID

L3N71B Models Only

See Figure 7

  1. Turn the key to the ON position (without starting the engine), and depress the accelerator all the way. The solenoid in the transmission should make an audible click.
  2.
  3. If the solenoid does not work, inspect the wiring, and test it electrically to determine whether the problem is in the wiring, the kickdown switch, or the solenoid.
  4.
  5. If the solenoid requires replacement, drain a little over 2 pts (1 liter) of fluid from the transmission before removing it.
