Oil Pan

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

1970-86 (720-D Series)

To remove the oil pan it will be necessary to unbolt the motor mounts and jack the engine to gain clearance. On the diesel it will be necessary to remove the crossmember, the oil filter, the injection pump rear bracket with the oil tube, and the main/secondary oil coolers. It is also helpful, on the diesel, to have the steering wheel in either the full left or right position. Remove the stabilizer bar or any other suspension or member that may make access easier to remove the pan. Drain the oil and remove the attaching screw, then remove the oil pan and gasket. Apply a thin bead of silicone seal to the engine block at the junction of the block and front cover, then to the junction of the block and the main bearing cap. Apply a thin coat of silicone seal to the new oil pan gasket, install the gasket to the block, and install the pan. Tighten the pan bolts in a circular pattern from the center of the ends, to 4-7 ft. lbs. (5-10 Nm). Overtightening will distort the pan lip, causing leakage.

Z24i ENGINES
  1. Remove the engine under cover and drain the engine oil.
  2.
  3. Remove the bolt from the front differential carrier member on 4wd models.
  4.
  5. Position a floor jack under the front differential carrier and remove the mounting bolts.
  6.
  7. On 2wd models, remove the front crossmember.
  8.
  9. On 4wd models, remove the transmission-to-rear engine mount bracket nuts.
  10.
  11. Remove the engine mount nuts and bolts. Attach and engine hoist and raise the engine slightly.
  12.
  13. Remove the oil pan mounting bolts. Insert a seal cutter tool between the cylinder block and the oil pan, then tap it around the circumference of the pan with a hammer. Remove the oil pan.
  14.

Be careful not to drive the seal cutter into the oil pump or rear oil seal retainer as you will damage the aluminum mating surface.

To install:
  1. Remove all traces of gasket material from the pan and block mating surfaces.
  2.
  3. Apply a continuous bead of sealant 0.137-0.177 in. (3.5-4.5mm) to the oil pan mating surface. Be sure to trace the sealant bead to the inside of the bolt holes where there is no groove.
  4.
  5. Install the pan and tighten all bolts in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the bolts to 4-5 ft. lbs. (4-7 Nm).
  6.
  7. Wait at least 30 minutes and then refill the engine with oil. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature and then check for leaks.
  8.
