All models utilize both a brake and a clutch master cylinder. Both are located above the brake booster unit at the driver's side firewall.
1972-80 models utilize two (2) brake master cylinder reservoirs.
Use only Heavy Duty Brake fluid meeting DOT 3 or SAE J1703 specifications.
FLUID LEVEL CHECK
See Figures 1 through 5
The fluid in the brake and/or clutch master cylinders should be checked every 6 months or 6000 miles (9600 km).
It is normal for the fluid level to fall as the disc brake pads wear. However, if the master cylinder requires filling frequently, you should check the system for leaks in the hoses, master cylinder, or wheel cylinders or calipers.
Check the fluid level on the side of the reservoir. If fluid is required, remove the screw (if so equipped) on the cap, then remove the filler cap and gasket from the master cylinder. Fill the reservoir to the full line in the reservoir. Install the filler cap, making sure the gasket is properly seated in the cap.
Brake fluid dissolves paint. It also absorbs moisture from the air; never leave a container or the master cylinder or the clutch cylinder uncovered any longer than necessary. The clutch master cylinder uses the same fluid as the brakes, and should be checked at the same time as the brake master cylinder.
