REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1970-77 Models
  1. Raise the truck on a hoist or jack up the front end and support it with jackstands placed under the frame.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and brake drum.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hub.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake backing plate from the steering knuckle/spindle support.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering knuckle/spindle arm, torsion bar, stabilizer bar, shock absorber and strut rod, in this order.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper fulcrum bolt securing the knuckle/spindle support to the upper control arm assembly and detach the two.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper control arm bushings from the knuckle/spindle support.
  14.  
  15. Remove the screw bushings from both ends of the lower control arm fulcrum pin.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the nut at the lower end of the knuckle/spindle support from the inside and pull out the cotter pin retaining the fulcrum.
  18.  
  19. Drive the fulcrum pin out of the lower control arm and remove the knuckle/spindle support and steering knuckle/spindle from the lower control arm.
  20.  
  21. Remove the bolts retaining the upper control arm pivot shaft and remove the upper control arm pivot shaft with the camber adjusting shims from the body bracket.
  22.  
  23. Remove the nut retaining the lower control arm pivot shaft and remove the lower control arm pivot shaft. Remove the lower control arm, with the torque arm, from the mounting bracket.
  24.  
  25. The lower control arm bushing is removed with a drift and hammer.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Install the upper and lower control arms. Tighten the lower control arm attaching nut to 54-58 ft. lbs. Tighten the upper control arm and camber adjusting shim bolts to 51-65 ft. lbs.
  2.  
  3. Coat the threads of the fulcrum pin with grease and line up the notch of the fulcrum pin with the knuckle/spindle support for the insertion of the cotter pin. Install the fulcrum pin to the knuckle/spindle support with a soft hammer, attaching the support to the upper control arm. Install the cotter pin and tighten the locknut to 5.8-8.0 ft. lbs.
  4.  
  5. Coat the inner threaded portion of the screw bushing with grease. Position the support at the center of the lower control arm and install the screw bushings. Check the dimensions of the installed screw bushing against those in the illustration, then tighten the bushing to 145-216 ft. lbs.
  6.  
  7. Replace the grease filler plug with a grease fitting and pump grease in until it comes out around the dust cover. Reinstall the filler plug.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper control arm bushing to the knuckle/spindle support and then connect the knuckle/spindle support to the upper control arm. Insert the connecting bolt from the rear and tighten the nut to 28-38 ft. lbs.
  10.  
  11. Install the strut rod, shock absorber, stabilizer rod, torsion bar and steering knuckle arm.
  12.  
  13. Install the brake backing plate to the steering knuckle/spindle and tighten the attaching bolts to 30-36 ft. lbs.
  14.  
  15. Install the brake drum and wheel and adjust the wheel bearing preload.
