Heater Assembly

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1970-79
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the defroster hoses.
  6.  
  7. Remove the three cable retaining clips and disconnect the control cables from the valves and water cock.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the two fan motor leads from each connector.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the two resistor lead wires from each connector.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the water hoses from the heater core and water cock.
  14.  
  15. Remove the three heater housing mounting bolts and remove the heater assembly from the vehicle.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install the heater assembly and tighten the mounting screws.
  2.  
  3. Connect the heater hoses at the core. Connect the two resistor wires and the fan motor leads.
  4.  
  5. Connect the control cables to the valves and water cock.
  6.  
  7. Fill the engine with coolant, connect the battery cable and start the engine. Check for any leaks.
  8.  

1980-88 All Series
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. On models with air conditioning, disconnect the heater hose from the engine.
  6.  
  7. On models without air conditioning, remove the heater duct and disconnect the heater hose at the heater.
  8.  
  9. Remove the console box and instrument panel assembly.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the air intake control cable from the blower motor.
  12.  
  13. On models equipped with A/C, remove the blower. Remove the evaporator unit nuts and bolts, but do not remove the evaporator unit.
  14.  
  15. Remove the heater assembly.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Installation the heater assembly and tighten the mounting screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the blower on A/C models and connect the air intake control cable.
  4.  
  5. Install the instrument panel and the console box.
  6.  
  7. Install the heater duct.
  8.  
  9. Connect the heater hoses and fill the engine with coolant. Adjust the control cable for proper operation. Start the engine and check for any leaks.
