ADJUSTMENTS

Adjustments to the manual steering gear are not necessary during normal service. Adjustments are performed only as part of overhaul.

Worm Bearing Preload

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Mount the gear in a vise.
  2.
  3. Using an inch lbs. torque wrench and spanner KV48101400, or its equivalent, rotate the worm shaft a few turns in each direction to settle the bearing and measure the existing preload.
  4.
  5. If preload is not 1.7-5.2 inch lbs., loosen the locknut and turn the adjusting plug with the spanner, in a clockwise rotation ONLY. Never adjust preload by turning the adjusting plug counterclockwise! If preload cannot be obtained in this manner, rebuild the gear.
  6.
  7. Apply liquid sealer on the shaft threads and tighten the locknut to 181-231 ft. lbs. (245-314 Nm).

Overcenter Preload

See Figure 3

  1. Mount the gear in a vise.
  2.
  3. With an inch lb. torque wrench on the sector shaft, rotate the sector shaft lock-to-lock, counting the total number of turns. Divide the total by two and position the shaft at this midpoint.
  4.
  5. Rotate the shaft one turn to either side of center using the torque wrench and noting the preload.
  6.

Fig. Fig. 3: Measuring overcenter preload

  1. Adjust the preload by loosening the adjusting screw locknut and turning the adjusting screw in a clockwise rotation ONLY. Preload should be 5.2-8.7 inch lbs.
  2.
  3. If adjustment will not correct preload, the unit must be rebuilt.
  4.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figure 4

  1. Raise and support the truck on jackstands.
  2.
  3. Unbolt the wormshaft pinch bolt at the rubber coupling.
  4.
  5. Matchmark the pitman arm and sector shaft, and with the wheels in a straight ahead position, remove the pitman arm with a puller.
  6.
  7. Unbolt and remove the gear from the frame.
  8.

To install:
  1. Install the gear and tighten the bolts to 62-71 ft. lbs. (84-96 Nm).
  2.
  3. Press the pitman arm onto the sector shaft so that the marks are aligned and then tighten the nut to 94-108 ft. lbs. (127-147 Nm).
  4.
  5. Slide the worm shaft into the coupling pinch bolt and tighten the bolt to 29-36 ft. lbs. (39-49 Nm) except on 1986-88 models (D21D series) where it should be 17-22 ft. lbs. (24-29 Nm).
