TESTING

See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4

Primary Resistance Check

In order to check the coil primary resistance, you must first disconnect all wires from the ignition coil terminals. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the positive (15) and the negative (1) terminals on the coil. The resistance should be:

L16 and L18-1.17-1.43-

L20B (1975)-1.17-1.43-

L20B (1976 Fed.)-1.17-1.43-

L20B (1977 Fed.)-1.08-1.32-

L20B (1976-77 Calif.)-0.45-0.55-

L20B (1978-80)-0.84-1.02-

Z22 (1981-83)-1.04-1.27-

Z20 (1984-86)-0.84-1.02-

Z24 (1984-87)-1.05-1.27-

Z24i (1986-88)-0.80-1.00-

VG30i (1986-88)-0.80-1.00-

Remember that all Z20, Z22, Z24 and Z24i engines have 2 ignition coils; check them both!

If the resistance is not within these tolerances, the coil will require replacement.

Secondary Resistance Check

In order to check the coil secondary resistance, you must first disconnect all wires from the ignition coil terminals. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the positive (15) terminal and the coil wire (4) terminal. The resistance should be:

L16 and L18-11,200-16,800-

L20B (1975)-11,200-16,800-

L20B (1976 Fed.)-11,200-16,800-

L20B (1977 Fed.)-8,240-12,400-

L20B (1976-77 Calif.)-8,500-12,700-

L20B (1978-80)-8,200-12,400-

Z22 (1981-83)-7,300-11,000-

Z20 (1984-86)-8,300-12,600-

Z24 (1984-87)-8,400-12,600-

Z24i (1986-88)-7,600-11,400-

VG30i (1986-88)-7,600-11,400-

Remember that all Z20, Z22, Z24 and Z24i engines have 2 ignition coils; check them both!

If the resistance is not within these tolerances, the coil will require replacement.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Tag and disconnect all electrical leads at the coil.
  4.
  5. Remove the mounting bolts and lift off the ignition coil.
  6.

To install:
  1. Install the coil in position and tighten the mounting bolts.
  2.
  3. Connect all wires.
