REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1 through 7

The following procedure requires the use of a special locknut removal tool, a puller to remove the companion flange, and a press to remove the center bearing. The center bearing is a sealed unit which must be replaced as an assembly if defective.

  1. Remove the driveshaft.
  2.
  3. Matchmark the flange yoke and the companion flange which connect the front half of the driveshaft to the rear. Also matchmark the companion flange and the front driveshaft. Remove the bolts and separate the shafts.

  1. You must devise a way to hold the driveshaft while unbolting the companion flange from the front driveshaft. Do not place the front driveshaft tube in a vise, because the chances are it will get crushed. The best way is to grip the flange somehow while loosening the nut. It is going to require some strength to remove. There are special locknut removal tools available. For 2wd models, use Tool No. ST38060002, on 4wd models use tool No. KV38104700.
  2.
  3. Remove the companion flange off the front driveshaft with a puller, then press the center bearing from its mount.
  4.

To Install:
  1. The new bearing is already lubricated. Install it into the mount, making sure that the seals and related components are facing the same way as then removed.
  2.
  3. Slide the companion flange onto the front driveshaft, aligning the marks made during removal. Install the washer and locknut. Tighten the nut to 181-217 ft. lbs. (245-294 Nm) models with Z24i and KA24E engines. On models with VG30i and VG30E engines, tighten to 174-203 ft. lbs. (235-275 Nm). Check that the bearing rotates freely around the driveshaft.
  4.
  5. Connect the companion flange to the flange yoke, aligning the marks made during disassembly.
  6.
  7. Install the driveshaft, aligning the marks made at the axle flange during removal.
