REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Z24i and KA24E Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Remove the heat shield.
  4.
  5. Tag and disconnect the high tension wires from the spark plugs on the exhaust side of the engine.
  6.
  7. Detach the oxygen sensor connector.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  10.

Soak the exhaust pipe retaining bolts with penetrating oil, if necessary, to loosen them.

  1. Remove the exhaust manifold mounting nuts, then remove the manifold from the cylinder head.
  2.

To install:
  1. Clean the exhaust gasket mounting surfaces.
  2.
  3. Using new gaskets, install the manifold onto the engine and, working from the center outward, tighten the exhaust manifold nuts/bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm).
  4.
  5. Reconnect the exhaust pipe to the manifold with a new gasket. Attach the oxygen sensor connector.
  6.
  7. Connect the spark plug wires, then install the air cleaner and any related hoses. Install the heat shield.
  8.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.
  11. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
  12.

VG30i and VG30E Engines

See Figures 1 through 7

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold sub-cover and manifold cover. Separate the EGR tube from the right-side exhaust manifold. Remove the exhaust manifold stay.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the left-side exhaust manifold at the exhaust pipe after removing the retaining nuts, then disconnect the right-side manifold from the connecting pipe.
  6.

Soak the exhaust pipe retaining bolts with penetrating oil, if necessary, to loosen them.

  1. Remove the bolts for each manifold in the order shown.
  2.

To install:
  1. Clean all gasket surfaces, then position new gaskets.
  2.
  3. Install the manifold to the engine, tightening the mounting bolts alternately, in two stages, in the order shown. Tighten the left-side bolts to 13-16 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm); tighten the right-side bolts to 16-20 ft. lbs. (22-27 Nm).
  4.
  5. Reconnect the exhaust pipe and the connecting pipe. Be careful not to break the bolts.
  6.
  7. Install the exhaust manifold stay and the EGR tube to the right-side manifold.
  8.
  9. Install the exhaust manifold covers.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.
  13. Start the engine and check for exhaust leaks.
