FLUID RECOMMENDATIONS





All models without limited slip differential: Hypoid gear oil API GL-5
 
Limited Slip Differential: Nissan-approved limited slip differential fluid.
 

Raise the rear of the truck and spin one of the wheels by hand. If both wheels turn simultaneously, your truck is equipped with a limited slip differential.

FLUID LEVEL CHECK

The oil in the front and/or rear differential should be checked at least every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or every 12 months, and replaced every 25,000-30,000 miles (40,000-48,000 km) or every 24 months. If driven in deep water it should be replaced immediately.

  1. With the truck parked on a level surface, remove the filler plug from the back of the differential.
  2.  

The plug on the bottom is the drain plug on rear differentials. The lower of the two plugs on the back of the housing is the drain plug on front differentials.

  1. If the oil begins to trickle out of the hole, there is enough. Otherwise, carefully insert your finger (watch out for sharp threads!) into the hole and check to see if the oil is up to the bottom edge of the filler hole.

  1. If not, add oil through the hole until the level is at the edge of the hole. Most gear oils come in a plastic squeeze bottle with a nozzle, making additions simple. You can also use a common kitchen baster. Use standard GL-5 hypoid type gear oil.

  3. Replace the filler plug and drive the truck for a while. Stop the truck and check for leaks. Tighten the plug on the front differential to 29-43 ft. lbs. (39-59 Nm). On rear differentials, tighten the plug to 43-72 ft. lbs. (59-98 Nm) on the H190A and H233B; or 29-43 ft. lbs. (39-59 Nm) on the C200.

DRAIN AND REFILL

The gear oil in the front or rear axle should be changed at least every 25,000-30,000 miles (40,000-48,000 km) or every 24 months; immediately if driven in deep water.

To drain and fill the differential, proceed as follows:

  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface. Set the parking brake.
  2.  
  3. Remove the filler (upper) plug. Place a container which is large enough to catch all of the differential oil under the drain plug.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drain (lower) plug and gasket, if so equipped. Allow all of the oil to drain into the container.
  6.  
  7. Install the drain plug. On the front differential, tighten the drain plug to 29-43 ft. lbs. (39-59 Nm). On rear differentials, tighten the plug to 43-72 ft. lbs. (59-98 Nm) on the H190A and H233B; or 29-43 ft. lbs. (39-59 Nm) on the C200.

It's usually a good idea to replace the drain plug gasket at this time.

  1. Refill with the proper axle lubricant (see the Recommended Lubricants chart). Be sure that the level reaches the bottom of the filler plug. DO NOT overfill.
  2.  
  3. Install the filler plug and check for leakage.
