REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1 through 7

  1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle on jackstands and remove the wheels.
  2.
  3. Remove the bolts attaching the axle shaft to the differential while the brake pedal is being depressed.
  4.
  5. Remove the free running hub assembly with the brake pedal depressed.
  6.
  7. Remove the brake caliper assembly without disconnecting the hydraulic brake line. Support or hang the brake caliper with a wire to avoid breaking the hose.
  8.
  9. Remove the tie rod ball joint.
  10.
  11. Support the lower link with a jack and remove the nuts attaching the lower ball joint on the lower link.
  12.
  13. Remove the upper ball joint attaching bolts.
  14.
  15. Remove the shock absorber lower attaching bolt.
  16.
  17. Cover the axle shaft boot with a suitable protector, and then remove the axle shaft with the knuckle still attached.
  18.
  19. Separate the axle shaft from the knuckle by removing the snapring and lightly tapping the shaft with a rubber mallet.
  20.

To install:
  1. Install the axle shaft into the knuckle and then install the assembly.
  2.

  1. When installing the bearing spacer onto the axle shaft, make sure that the bearing spacer is facing in the proper direction. Temporarily install a new snapring on the axle shaft at the same thickness as it was before removal and then measure the axial end-play of the axle shaft with a dial gauge. The axial end-play should be 0.004-0.012 in. (0.1-0.3mm). Select another snapring if not within specifications.
  2.
  3. Connect the shock absorber and tighten the bolt to 43-58 ft. lbs. (59-78 Nm).
  4.
  5. Connect the upper ball joint and tighten the bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm).
  6.
  7. Connect the lower ball joint to the lower link and tighten the nuts to 35-45 ft. lbs. (47-61 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the tie rod ball joint and the brake caliper.
  10.
  11. Install the hub and then connect the axle shaft to the differential and tighten the bolts to 25-33 ft. lbs. (34-44 Nm).
  12.
  13. Install the wheels, remove the stands and lower the vehicle.
  14.

JOINT OVERHAUL

Always refer to the illustrations as a guide for this service repair. Most joint assemblies are to be replaced not overhauled. Although outer (wheel side) boot and joint replacement may sometimes be accomplished with the shaft in the vehicle, it is recommended that the shaft be removed to prevent possible damage during the procedure.

Disassembly

See Figure 8

DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER SIDE
  1. Place the axle shaft in a suitable vise and remove the plug seal from the slide joint housing by lightly tapping around the slide joint housing.
  2.
  3. Remove the boot bands.
  4.
  5. Move the boot and slide joint housing toward wheel side and put matchmarks.
  6.
  7. Pry off snaprings. Remove the spider assembly.
  8.
  9. Remove the boot.
  10.

Clean all parts. Check parts for evidence of wear or damage. Replace the driveshaft if it is twisted or cracked. When replacing boots always replace the boot bands.

WHEEL SIDE

  1. Remove the axle and place in a suitable bench vise.
  2.
  3. Before separating joint assembly, put matchmarks on driveshaft and joint assembly.
  4.
  5. Remove the boot bands.
  6.
  7. Separate joint assembly by lightly tapping it. The joint on the wheel side is not to be disassembled.
  8.

Assembly
DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER SIDE
  1. Install new boot band, boot and side joint housing to the driveshaft.
  2.
  3. Install spider assembly in the correct position, ensuring marks are properly aligned.
  4.
  5. Install new snaprings.
  6.

  1. Pack boot with grease.
  2.
  3. Set boot length so that it does not swell and deform when it is installed. Make sure that the new boot is properly installed on the driveshaft groove.
  4.
  5. Lock both boot bands. Install new plug seal (with sealant) to slide joint housing.
  6.

WHEEL SIDE
  1. Install new boot band on driveshaft.
  2.
  3. Install joint assembly in the correct position, ensuring marks are properly aligned.
  4.
