ADJUSTMENT

  1. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. On vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes, check the brake adjustment and correct as necessary. The drum brake adjustment procedure is described earlier in this section.

  1. Loosen the brake cable adjuster assembly locknut.
  2.  
  3. Rotate the adjuster assembly until the parking brake control lever operating stroke is as follows:

    center lever (except Pathfinder) and 2wd with stick lever-10-12 notches
     
    4wd with stick lever-9-11 notches
     
    Pathfinder with a center lever-7-9 notches

Notches are measured from the rest position (in or down) to the full-on position (out or up).

  1. Release the parking brake and make sure that the rear wheels turn freely with no drag.
  2.  
  3. On 1989 models, the brake light should come on after 1 notch (pickup w/ center lever) or 2 notches (pickup w/ stick lever and Pathfinders w/ center lever). On 1990-95 models, it should come on after 1 notch (stick lever) or 2 notches (center lever). If not, adjust the switch by bending the plate.

  5. Tighten the locknut at the parking brake cable adjuster assembly, then lower and road test the vehicle.
  6.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figures 5, 6 and 7

  1. Fully release the parking brake control lever.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the cable lever adjusting nut at the frame crossmember.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the cable from the control lever.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear drums, then disconnect the brake cables from the parking brake toggle levers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lockplate, spring and clip, then pull the parking brake cable out toward the cable lever.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lever cotter pin and disconnect the cable.
  14.  
  15. Install the cables in the reverse order of removal. Be sure to use new cotter pins. Apply a light coat of grease to the cables to make sure that they slide properly. Adjust the parking brakes.
  16.  
  17. Lower the truck and test the parking brake operation.
  18.
