Parking Brake Shoes

Vehicles equipped with rear disc brakes utilize separate drum-type brake shoes for parking brakes.

ADJUSTMENT



Vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes do not contain separate parking brake shoes, so no separate parking brake shoe adjustment is required.

Vehicles With Rear Disc Brakes

See Figure 4

  1. Raise and support the rear of the truck safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the adjuster hole plug at the rear of the brake backing plate.
  4.  
  5. Make sure that the parking brake is fully released, then rotate the star wheel adjuster downward with a brake adjusting tool until the shoes are touching the brake drum.
  6.  
  7. Back off the star wheel 7-8 notches.
  8.  
  9. Install the hole plug and rotate the wheel a few times to ensure that the shoes are not dragging on the drums.
  10.  
  11. Lower the truck and test the parking brake operation.
  12.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes do not contain separate parking brake shoes, so no separate parking brake shoe procedure is required.

Vehicles With Rear Disc Brakes

See Figure 5

  1. Raise the rear of the truck and support it with safety stands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the adjuster hole plug at the rear of the brake backing plate.
  4.  
  5. Make sure that the parking brake is fully released and rotate the star wheel adjuster downward with a brake adjusting tool so that the shoes come out of contact with the drum.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake disc/parking brake drum assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spring retainer and springs.
  10.  
  11. Unhook the brake return and adjusting screw springs, then swivel out the brake shoes.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Position the brake shoes on the backing plate.
  2.  
  3. Install the return and adjusting screw springs.
  4.  
  5. Position the brake strut, then install the guide plate.
  6.  
  7. Position the anti-rattle springs, then install the retainers.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake disc/parking brake drum assembly, then adjust the parking brake shoes.
  10.  
  11. Lower the truck and test the parking brake operation.
  12.
