Fig. Fig. 1: Slide the axle housing out through the leaf springs

  1. Disconnect the parking brake cable and the brake line.
  2.
  3. Position a floor jack under the center of the axle housing and raise it just enough to support the assembly.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the lower end of each shock absorber at the spring carrier.
  6.
  7. Remove the spring carrier U-bolts and let the springs drop down slightly.
  8.
  9. On 2wd models, carefully maneuver the axle housing out through the springs. This will probably require two floor jacks or another set of jackstands. On 4wd models, the axle housing is below the leaf springs; simply lower the housing and remove it.
  10.

To install:
  1. Reinstall the axle housing and support it in position. Slide the spring carrier U-bolts over the axle tube (or leaf springs on 4wd models) and tighten the nuts to 65-72 ft. lbs. (88-98 Nm).
  2.
  3. Reconnect the shock absorbers and tighten the mounting bolts to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).
  4.
  5. Connect the parking brake cable and the brake lines.
  6.
  7. Connect the driveshaft, install the wheels and lower the vehicle.
  8.
