REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Except C200 Models
  1. Raise the rear of the truck and support it with jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the driveshaft at the final drive unit.
  4.  
  5. Plug the rear oil seal and then remove the axle shafts.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the final drive-to-axle housing mounting bolts and remove the final drive.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the final drive and tighten the mounting bolts to 12-18 ft. lbs. (17-25 Nm). Be sure that the gasket on H233B models is installed in the correct position.
  2.  
  3. Install the axle shafts and connect the driveshaft.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle and fill the final drive with gear oil.
  6.  

C200 Models
  1. Raise the rear of the truck and support it with jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the driveshaft at the final drive unit.
  4.  
  5. Drain all fluid from the final drive and then remove the axle shafts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the axle housing assembly with the leaf springs.
  8.  
  9. Drain the gear oil.
  10.  
  11. Pull out the axle shafts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear cover and gasket.
  14.  

To Install:
  1. Install the rear cover and gasket and tighten the mounting bolts to 8-10 ft. lbs. (11-14 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the axle housing assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the axle shafts and connect the driveshaft.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle and fill the final drive with gear oil.
  8.  

OVERHAUL

Inspection Before Disassembly
  1. Position the removed differential carrier assembly in a suitable holding fixture.
  2.  
  3. Check total preload by turning the drive pinion in both directions several times to set the bearings. Using a torque wrench or equivalent, measure the valve. The standard valve for model H190A and C220 models is 10-19 inch lbs. (1.13-2.15 Nm) of turning torque. The standard valve for H233B model is 8.7-17.4 inch lbs. (0.98-1.97 Nm) of turning torque.
  4.  
  5. Check backlash of ring gear with a dial indicator at several points. The standard valve for models H190A and C220 ring gear to drive pinion backlash is 0.0051-0.0071 in. (0.13-0.18mm) and 0.0059-0.0079 in. (0.15-0.20mm) for H233B model.
  6.  
  7. Check run-out of ring gear with a dial indicator. The standard valve is 0.0031 in. (0.08mm) of run-out for all models.
  8.  
  9. Using suitable equipment check differential tooth contact for correct pattern as follows:
    1. Thoroughly clean ring gear and drive pinion teeth.
    2.  
    3. Sparingly apply red lead or equivalent to 3 or 4 teeth of ring gear drive side.
    4.  
    5. Hold companion flange steady by hand and rotate the ring gear in both directions.
    6.  
    7. Interrupt contact marks left on the ring gear assembly. Gear tooth contact pattern check is necessary to verify correct relationship between ring gear and drive pinion.
    8.  

  10.  
  11. On all models, check backlash of side gear. Using a thickness gauge, measure clearance between side gear thrust washer and differential case. The standard valve is 0.039-0.0079 in. (1-2mm) of side gear clearance.

Disassembly and Assembly
  1. Position the removed differential carrier assembly in a suitable holding fixture.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark side bearing caps and shims if so equipped to ensure that they are replaced in proper position during reassembly.
  4.  
  5. On H233B model, remove the side lock fingers and side bearing caps. Remove side bearings with suitable tools.
  6.  
  7. Remove the differential case from the final drive housing. Mark all parts for correct installation.
  8.  
  9. Attach a flange holding wrench or equivalent to hold flange from turning. Remove the drive pinion nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the companion flange using suitable puller.
  12.  
  13. Remove the drive pinion together with pinion rear bearing inner cone, drive pinion bearing spacer and pinion bearing adjusting washer.
  14.  
  15. Remove front oil seal and pinion front bearing inner cone.
  16.  
  17. Remove the side oil seals as required.
  18.  
  19. Remove the pinion front and rear bearing outer races with brass drift from housing.
  20.  
  21. Remove the pinion rear bearing inner cone and drive pinion adjusting washer. Remove rear bearing with suitable press and separator plate.
  22.  
  23. Remove side bearing inner race assembly with a puller from the differential carrier. Mark all parts for correct installation.
  24.  
  25. Remove ring gear by spreading out lock straps if so equipped and loosening ring gear bolts in a crisscross pattern. Remove all retaining bolts.
  26.  
  27. Tap ring gear off gear case using a soft hammer or equivalent. Tap evenly all around to keep ring gear from binding.
  28.  
  29. On C200 and H233B models, separate the left and right differential case halves.
  30.  
  31. On R190A model, drive out pinion mate shaft lock pin with drift pin from ring gear side.
  32.  
  33. Draw out pinion mate shaft and thrust block if so equipped. Rotate pinion mate gears out of case and remove side gears and thrust washers. Put marks on gears and thrust washers so that they can be reinstalled in their original positions from which they were removed.
  34.  
  35. Clean disassembled parts completely. Repair or replace any damaged or faulty parts. If replacing drive pinion or ring gear, replace with a new hypoid gear as a set.
  36.  
  37. On C200 and H233B models, assemble the differential carrier as follows:
    1. Measure the clearance between the side gear thrust washer and differential case.
    2.  
    3. The standard valve for the clearance between side gear thrust washer and differential case is 0.0039-0.0079 in. (1-2mm). The clearance can be adjusted with a side gear thrust washer.
    4.  
    5. Apply gear oil to gear tooth surfaces and thrust surfaces and check to see they turn properly.
    6.  
    7. Install the left and right differential case halves tighten retaining bolts to 40-47 ft. lbs. (54-64 Nm). Position the differential case on the ring gear. Apply Loctite or equivalent and tighten the ring gear retaining bolts in a crisscross fashion to 98-112 ft. lbs. (133-152 Nm). Bend up the lock straps, if so equipped.
    8.  
    9. Press fit side bearings on the differential case using suitable press and tools.
    10.

  39. On R190A model, assemble the differential carrier as follows:
    1. Install pinion mate gears, side gears and thrust washers into differential case.
    2.  
    3. Fit pinion mate shaft and thrust block.
    4.  
    5. Adjust clearance between rear face of side gear and thrust washer by selecting side gear thrust washer. The standard clearance valve is 0.0039-0.0079 in. (1-2mm).
    6.  
    7. Install pinion mate shaft lock pin using a punch. Make sure lock pin is flush with case.
    8.  
    9. Apply gear oil to gear tooth surfaces and thrust surfaces and check to see they turn properly.
    10.  
    11. Place ring gear on differential case and install new lock straps and bolts. Tighten bolts to 98-112 ft. lbs. (133-152 Nm) in a crisscross fashion, lightly tapping bolt head with a hammer. Then bend up lock straps to lock the bolts in place.
    12.  
    13. Press fit front and rear bearing outer races using suitable tools. Make sure that the bearing races are seated squarely in their respective bores.
    14.

  41. Press fit pinion front and rear bearing outer races into housing with suitable tools on all models as necessary.
  42.  
  43. On all models select pinion bearing adjusting washer and drive pinion bearing spacer as follows:
    1. Make sure all parts are clean and that bearings are well lubricated. Assemble the pinion gear bearings into the pinion preload shim selector tool J-34309 or equivalent. Make sure that the front and rear bearings are in the correct position on the special tool (rear bearing first).
    2.  
    3. Install the pinion preload shim selector tool or equivalent into the final drive axle housing. Make sure that the pinion height gauge will make a full turn and tighten the 2 sections by hand. Turn the special tool with bearings installed on it several times to seat the bearings.
    4.  
    5. Measure the turning torque at the end of the tool with a torque wrench. The standard value for the H190A and C200 models is 8.7-11.3 inch lbs. (1-1.3 Nm). The standard value for the H233B model is 3.5-7.8 inch lbs. (0.4-0.9 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Place correct pinion height adapter (each model has different pinion height adapter) onto the gauge plate and tighten it by hand.
    8.  
    9. Insert the pinion bearing adjusting spacer squarely into the recessed portion of the pinion preload shim selector tool J-34309, or equivalent. Select the correct thickness of the pinion bearing preload adjusting washer using the distance between spacer and gauge anvil tool. The exact measurement you get with the distance between spacer and special tool is the thickness of the adjusting washer required.
    10.  
    11. Position the side bearing discs tool J-25269-4 and arbor firmly in the side bearing bores and torque the side bearing cap bolts to 36-43 ft. lbs. (49-58 Nm) on the H190A model, 65-72 ft. lbs. (88-98 Nm) on the C200 model and 69-76 ft. lbs. (93.5-103 Nm) on the H233B model.
    12.  
    13. Select the correct standard pinion height adjusting washer thickness using a standard valve plus the distance between pinion height adapter tool and the arbor. The standard valve for the C200 is 0.138 in. (3.5mm). The standard valve for the H190A is 0. The standard valve for the H233B is either 0.098, 0.118 or 0.138 in. (2.5mm, 3.0mm, or 3.5mm) specification.
    14.  
    15. Correct the pinion height washer size by referring to the pinion head number. There are 2 numbers on the pinion gear. The first one refers to the pinion and ring gear as a matched set and the number should be the same on the ring gear. The second number is the pinion head height number and it refers to the ideal pinion height for proper operation. Use this number to determine the correct pinion height washer. Select the correct pinion height washer and remove the special tools with pinion bearings from housing.

  45. Install pinion height adjusting washer in drive pinion, bevel side toward gear and press fit rear bearing inner race in it, using press and special tools.
  46.  
  47. Lubricate the front bearing with gear oil and place it in the gear housing.
  48.  
  49. Carefully fit a new oil seal into carrier. Make sure the oil seal is flush with the end of the carrier and apply multi-purpose grease into the cavity between the lips.
  50.  
  51. Install the drive pinion bearing spacer, pinion bearing adjusting washer and drive pinion in housing.
  52.  
  53. Install companion flange into drive pinion by tapping with a soft hammer or equivalent.
  54.  
  55. Hold companion flange and temporarily tighten pinion nut, until there is no axial play. Make sure that threaded portion of drive pinion and pinion nut are free from oil or grease. Tighten pinion nut by degrees to the specified preload while checking the preload with torque wrench. Preload with oil seal is 9.5-13.9 inch lbs. (1.07-1.57 Nm) for H190A model and 9.5-14.8 inch lbs. (1.07-1.67 Nm) for the C200 model. The preload with oil seal is 4.3-8.7 inch lbs. (0.5-1.0 Nm) for H233B model.

  57. When checking preload, turn drive pinion in both directions several times to set bearing rollers. After preload is reached, torque the pinion nut to 94-217 ft. lbs. (127-294 Nm) for H190A and C200 models. Torque the pinion nut to 145-181 ft. lbs. (196-245 Nm) on H233B model. Preload and final pinion nut torque must both be attained for correct operation of axle unit.
  58.  
  59. On the H190A model select the side retaining washer as follows:
    1. Make sure all parts are cleaned and well lubricated with automatic transmission fluid.
    2.  
    3. Remove the side bearings with suitable tools. Install side bearing old shims on the carrier side away from the ring gear.
    4.  
    5. Reinstall carrier side bearings using suitable press.
    6.  
    7. Install the assembly into the housing. Install side bearing caps and tighten retaining bolts to 36-43 ft. lbs. (49-58 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Turn carrier several times to seat bearings. Measure the carrier turning torque with a tool at the ring gear retaining bolt. The standard valve of pulling force at the ring gear bolt is 7.7-8.8 ft. lbs. (10.5-12 Nm). Add or subtract shims as necessary. Increase shim thickness to increase turning torque and decrease shim thickness to decrease turning torque. Record correct shim(s) thickness and remove carrier and bearings.
    10.

  61. On the C200 model select the side retaining washer as follows:
    1. Make sure all parts are cleaned and well lubricated with automatic transmission fluid.
    2.  
    3. Install the differential carrier with side bearings and bearing races installed into gear housing.
    4.  
    5. Install side bearing spacer on the ring gear end of the carrier.
    6.  
    7. Install old preload shims using suitable tools on the carrier end opposite the ring gear.
    8.  
    9. Install side bearing caps and tighten retaining bolts to 65-72 ft. lbs. (88-98 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Turn carrier several times to seat bearings. Measure the carrier turning torque with a tool at the ring gear retaining bolt. The standard valve of pulling force at the ring gear bolt is 7.7-8.8 ft. lbs. (10.5-12 Nm). Add or subtract shims as necessary. Record correct shim(s) thickness, then remove the carrier and bearings.
    12.

  63. On all models press fit side bearing outer race into side case retainer using suitable tools.
  64.  
  65. On H190A model install differential case assembly with side bearings outer races into housing. On C200 model insert left and right side bearing adjusting washers between side bearing and carrier. Install differential assembly and side bearing spacer using suitable tools.
  66.  
  67. On H233B model install the side bearing adjusters on gear carrier, screw adjusters lightly at this stage.
  68.  
  69. Align mark on bearing caps and install bearing caps torque to 36-43 ft. lbs. (49-58 Nm) on H190A model and 65-72 ft. lbs. (88-98 Nm) on C200 model. On the H223 model, do not fully tighten at this point to allow further tightening of side bearing adjusters.
  70.  
  71. On the H190A and C200 models measure the ring gear to drive pinion backlash with a dial indicator. The standard value is 0.0051-0.0071 in. (0.13-0.18mm). If backlash is too small, decrease thickness of right shim and increase thickness of left shim by the same amount. If backlash is too great, reverse the above procedure. Never change the total amount of shims, as it will change the bearing preload.
  72.  
  73. On the H233B model tighten both right and left bearing adjusters alternately and measure the backlash and total preload at the same time. The standard value is 0.0059-0.0079 in. (0.15-0.20mm). Tighten side bearing caps to 69-76 ft. lbs. (93.5-103 Nm) and install side lock clip in correct position.
  74.  
  75. On the H190A and C200 models check total preload with torque wrench, turn drive pinion several times in both directions to set bearings. The standard valve for total preload is 10-19 inch lbs. (1.13-2.15 Nm) for H190A model and 10-20 inch lbs. (1.13-2.26 Nm) for the C200 model.
  76.  
  77. On H190 and C200 models if preload is too great, remove the same amount of shims from each side. If preload is too small, add the same amount of shims to each side. Never add or remove a different number of shims for each side as it will change ring gear to drive pinion backlash.
  78.  
  79. Recheck ring gear to drive pinion backlash. Check run-out of ring gear the standard valve for run-out is 0.0031 in. (0.08mm) on all models.
  80.  
  81. Check tooth contact pattern as necessary. Apply gear oil to all moving parts and use sealant and or gasket when assembling to the axle housing. On the C200 model install rear cover and gasket.
